Thanks

I see a trend there. The bleeding edge of the Web has moved away from HTML and onto other fronts — fronts where the standards bodies have not yet been involved. The Scobleizer: Molly calls for Web standards advocates to hold strong

Bleeding edge is really well done Flash or other more "active" technologies: XAML, XUL, Java Webstart. Does this mean you have to ignore standards? Definitely not, but here it's more about interfaces (XML-RPC, SOAP, platform APIs) than formats (XHTML etc.).

Hyatt is, of course, neglecting to mention that, alongside the KHTML engine Safari is based on, there is a KSVG engine. They wouldn’t have to reinvent the wheel to use that any more than they did to integrate KHTML. What’s more, an SVG-based interface would allow authors to create pixel-perfect interfaces in Adobe Illustrator, among other tools. How can that not be seen as an attractive feature to a Mac audience? bestkungfu weblog: On implementing SVG

There has been something of a sh*tstorm over Apple’s decision to add a couple of extensions to HTML 4.01. Basically, it seems like the answer that comes back is “XHTML is hard”. That doesn’t seem good enough. Companies like Apple, Opera, and the Mozilla project need to tackle the hard stuff. bestkungfu’s point about the KSVG engine is a good one: Apple, please implement SVG by integrating the KSVG into WebKit. Hmmm…maybe even a good fit for CoreImage?

This needs some loud shouting by anyone/everyone that cares about standards, and about moving past XHTML. Only with XHTML and XML-based technologies can we move forwards on the web. Apple may have a small window now where they can add some more tech to Tiger, the next version of OS X.

The great thing is that with one (X)HTML document, you can have a slide show, a printer-friendly version, and a screen presentation. I put markup and CSS examples right there in the document, ready to be printed, and simply hide them in the slide show. In some cases, I printed out the file for handouts, and then used the exact same file for the slide show. It was very, very handy. Eric's Archived Thoughts: Slide Show Beta

Eric Meyer is actually talking about a feature of Opera called Opera Show, but it describes what he has now accomplished in CSS, XHTML, and a little JavaScript: a browser-based slideshow that is just plain code underneath, with no plug-ins. It looks and feels like PowerPoint…except it isn't, and it can be used anywhere. Check out Eric's test file. Viewing source on that page shows a thing of beauty.

Dear Apple/Steve: please make Keynote export to this "format" automatically.

A long time ago (almost 1000 posts ago!), I talked about an alternative to <acronym title="Fried Of A Friend">FOAF</acronym> I had dreamed up, called PROFILE. I’m still not a big fan of FOAF’s RDF-ishness, but I love open-ness more, and FOAF is the only moderately widespread profile interchange format today (my FOAF is here, thanks to the Drupal module James wrote).

I expressed it really badly back then, but what I wanted PROFILE to be was an XHTML-valid format so that it would easily display within web pages using nothing but CSS for styling, but still have enough semantic meaning to be machine-parsable.

So the next target is calendaring information. Tantek calls it hCalendar, inspired by some work at foocamp04 on HTMLForCalendars.

I recently wrote up some thoughts on syndicating events using iCal in Drupal. That is, embed/attach iCal to RSS feeds. This will likely still happen (lots of people can easily consume iCal compatible information today). But for web-to-web representation, especially in feed readers, an XHTML compatible format would provide easy display today.

Hat tip to kellan for the Tantek related links.
