# 2021-05-31 - Read: [[Governing the Information Commons]]. - Nice article about building [[governance]] layers into platforms. Following [[Elinor Ostrom]]'s [[8 principles for managing a commons]]. The part that resonated most for me on first reading is the need to understand the many patterns of governance that exist. From there we can move from the simple defaulting to [[private property]] based models. - [[Hometown]] says on its [wiki](https://github.com/hometown-fork/hometown/wiki/Exclusive-lists): "Also, if Hometown is going to be a universal reader, you're going to need better control over organizing your feeds." That's really interesting - same as the [[social reader]] idea in [[IndieWeb]] presumably. (I've imagined before a social reader in the Mastodon/TweetDeck style.) - This human-readable summary of the Peer Production License is handy. https://civicwise.org/peer-production-licence-_-human-readable-summary/ - "The peer production license is an example of the Copyfair type of license, in which only other commoners, cooperatives and nonprofits can share and re-use the material, but not commercial entities intent on making profit through the commons without explicit reciprocity" - Well this sounds pretty terrible. [[Amazon Sidewalk]] - the upcoming automatic enrolment of Amazon devices in to an Amazon mesh network. Bet you can't connect to it from a non-Amazon device. - https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/05/amazon-devices-will-soon-automatically-share-your-internet-with-neighbors/ - [[Elon Musk]] unveils Skypod - https://www.theonion.com/elon-musk-unveils-urban-slingshot-system-able-to-move-6-1846702819 - Bookmarked: [The Women of Raqqa Are Rebuilding Their Future](https://jacobinmag.com/2021/05/raqqa-women-blooming-in-the-desert-film/) > Four years since [[Raqqa]] was liberated from ISIS, women are playing a leading role in rebuilding the [[Syria]]n city. Their activism shows that socialist feminism isn’t just about gender parity in top jobs — it’s about women taking control of their own lives. - https://jacobinmag.com/2021/05/raqqa-women-blooming-in-the-desert-film/ - Listened: [[A state-sponsored ‘hijacking’ – the arrest of Belarus blogger Raman Pratasevich]]. Pretty awful stuff. - https://www.theguardian.com/news/audio/2021/may/28/a-state-sponsored-hijacking-the-arrest-of-belarus-blogger-raman-pratasevich - Listened: [[Can the US avoid another Trump?]] - Sad the part where they said Trump wouldn't have been elected if Obama hadn't. That the election of a Black man scared the right and moved them further rightwards. - Also how Trump's election followed essentially a right-wing populist playbook - almost identical to [[Viktor Orbán]]. - https://www.theguardian.com/news/audio/2021/may/31/can-the-us-avoid-another-trump-podcast
