Reclaim the Stacks: reflections, May 2024ยง

[[Digital ecosocialism]] is a counter to [[digital capitalism]], and reclaiming the stacks is focused on the transition from the latter to the former.

โฅ… [[reclaim-the-stacks.png]]

While I’m more interested in building the new world than theorising the old, it’s true that you need to have an understanding of the current conditions in order to change them.

So, it’s important to understand - just what is [[digital capitalism]]? We probably all have a rough notion of what we mean by it - essentially, whatever it is that the [[Big Tech]] firms do ([[The purpose of a system is what it does]]). But there’s obviously a lot of fine-grained detail within that.

Two great resources have just dropped that will be of interest to anyone who wants a more thorough understanding:

I’m slowly working my way through the [[Digital Capitalism online course]]. It’s a trove of well-presented learnings on digital capitalism - what it is, why it’s bad, and what we could do instead.

I’m also dipping into [[Critical Perspectives on Digital Capitalism: Theories and Praxis]] here and there - it’s much more dense and academic, but people like [[Christian Fuchs]] and [[Jodi Dean]] have been theorising on this for a long time, so you know it’s going to be good.

Social.Coop Tech Working Group 2024 Roadmapยง

Objectiveยง

To define high level goals for the Tech Working Group of Social.Coop to explore during 2024, and request review/comment from the wider community.

Metaยง

Projectsยง

These are projects currently being run by the Tech Working Group, together with high level next steps we have identified for them. They are in priority order:

  • wiki.social.coop
    • Moved to [[mediawiki]] running on top of [[coop cloud]] during 2023.
    • Next steps:
      • Pretty stable/usable as of the time of writing.
  • SSO
  • Nextcloud with SSO
    • Or a calendar-only service with SSO
    • Would make recurring coordination of social.coop events much more inclusive
  • Mastodon (main instance)
    • Many upgrades took place, and we moved to a new server :)
    • Next steps:
      • Move to Hometown: yay or nay?
  • Bonfire (for a second instance)
    • bonfire.social.coop nominally up for experimental usage.
    • Next steps:
      • Configure SSO (Mayel sent a build to try)
      • Test federation fixes once they’re there
  • Monitoring and alerting
    • Monitor further items in datadog
    • Or adopt a free monitoring platform (which?)
    • Items we need to make sure we cover:
      • Basic uptime monitoring
      • Instance latency and errors
  • General
    • [[Flancian]] tested backups for the wiki, restores come next :)
    • Convergence between [[ansible]]-based and [[coop cloud]]-based infrastructure might be desirable in the future, but better bang-for-the-buck might be found elsewhere.
    • [[Bots]]:

Other topics of interestยง

  • Organizing circle participation might yield a steady stream of feedback from other working groups.
  • The recurring domain name ownership issue is being tackled by the FWG.

Ulverston Repair Cafe, February 2024ยง

First [[Ulverston Repair Cafe]] in a few months for me.

I helped a chap making the connection between his MacBook Air and his BBC Micro:Bit.

And I looked at an old slow Dell Vostro laptop for someone - but didn’t get much time on this, beyond explaining to them how to back up some old files.

I wonder what’s the best app for benchmarking the performance of a Windows machine - to then report whether your changes have made a difference.

Ulverston Repair Cafe, March 2024ยง

[[Ulverston Repair Cafe]].

Second month back after being away for a few.

Looked at a couple of slow laptops.

Laptop 1ยง

A Dell Vostro. A bit of a long-term project for one of the other volunteers - today just backing up important files, which took about 2 hours running in the background.

Laptop 2ยง

An Asus running Windows 10.

Reported issueยง

  • Reported as had been slowing down for a while.
  • But had recently started really creaking.

Work carried outยง

  • At startup, Teams reports not having enough free space.
  • This message also appeared at startup "instruction at โ€ฆ referenced memory at xxxx. The required data was not placed into memory because of an I/O error status of xxx Click on OK to to terminate the program".
  • First thing, based off the messages, looked at available drive space.
    • Windows Explorer -> right-click C: -> Properties.
    • There was only 9Mb available.
    • Full drive space only 60Gb.
  • Have a look for where the space is being used up.
  • Mostly apps and features. A few Gb on temporary files (mostly downloads folder). User documents only about 5Gb.
  • Temporary files -> Cleared temporary files.
  • Apps & features -> Uninstalled a few apps. (3 of which were different virus checkers.)
  • After this, had 9Gb free.
  • Installed AVG Free. (You have to pay for Windows Defender now? Oh - the free version is actually called Windows Security on Windows 10. Stay protected with Windows Security - Microsoft Support).
  • Turned off some apps starting at startup.
  • Restarted.
    • Was forced to install some Windows updates which was annoying and wasted some time.
  • Much faster at startup!
  • Still not the speediest machine. Said that installing more memory and an SSD could possibly help, but that they were not easy to access.
  • Wrote down instructions for checking space and removing unneeded files, and how to check startup apps periodically. Advised to run AVG scan regularly.
