A plain-text personal knowledge management system.

I use org-roam for my [[PKM]] (note-taking, digital garden, etc). Pretty much all of my digital garden is made using org-roam in fact. I started using it in March 2020.

I love it.

Whut§

It is a note-taking tool for [[networked thought]]. The tool encourages a non-hierarchical [[note-taking]] workflow. With Org-roam, note-taking becomes effortless and fun: write notes wherever you want, and link them up however you want.

Some of my customisations of org-roam are [[here]].

One downside, or at least something to mull upon - org-roam doesn’t make much use of org’s heading structure. It’s all file-based, each note is a file. No problem with that right now, just it goes a little against how org mode tends to work?

Org-roam is a major mod on top of [[Org-mode]], with a goal of creating a Zettelkasten, but finding the vanilla version wasn’t enough. Org-roam attempts to replicate [[Roam Research]] in the Org-mode format.

This speaks to the [[Hackers]] culture of modifying tools to fit personal uses, but it’s expanded beyond, with over 3800 ‘stars’ on Github as of 2021-09-15.

Pulling stats out of org-roam§

Inspired by Alex Kehayias’ note on Querying Stats From Org-Roam, I’m going to use org-babel inline evaluation of sql to pull out and publish some stats too.

How many notes do I have?§

Notes over time§

Hmm. Alex gets notes per month from the date stamp in the headline. I’ve removed that as I don’t want it in my published filenames. That’s a bit annoying then, does it remove ability to do querying based on trends over time.

The files table does hold mtime and atime. So maybe I can do something with mtime at least.

Querying org-roam§

I’d like something like [[org-ql]] for [[org-roam]].

Ideally I can just use org-ql. My first concern is maybe it won’t work so well on the large number of files you have in an org-roam project.

Guess I should just try it and see.

Turning on case-insensitive search in org-roam§

Not sure if this has happened just recently, or I’ve been living with it for a long time, but: case sensitive node search in [[org-roam]] was starting to bug me.

It’s actually not anything specific to org-roam - it comes from the completion engine.

Spacemacs§

Turns out that it’s [[Helm]] that is doing it, when set to the ‘smart’ completion algorithm.

I just need to (setq helm-case-fold-search t) and all is good - much smoother completion experience.

Using fuzzy links AKA wikilinks in org-roam§

Added in org-roam 1.2.2. These are my notes from when upgrading to that version.

In this release we support fuzzy links of the form [[roam:Title]], [[roam:*Headline]] and [[roam:Title*Headline]]. Completion for these fuzzy links is supported via completion-at-point.

I think I might need to set up company-at-point. Do I have it out of the box? The double-bracket thing isn’t working, anyway.

Hmm, it’s because for my ngm-journal-mode, my writing mode that I use for files in my org-roam wiki, I turn it off. I think because it annoyed me with word completions all the time when I was writing. Maybe there’s a way to choose which completions company mode does. I’ll come back to that… for now I’ll just not turn it off.

From this post, How to to get {{Title of the target note}} working with inline autocomplete i…, I can see that

works kind of.

The company settings are, well, for company, and the smartparens setting is for getting your double square brackets.

The org-manual used to specify a suggested way of getting your [[ autocompleted and then triggering completion-at-point.

To easily insert roam links, one may wish to use a package like key-chord.

It’s gone now from the manual. It’s how I still do it though.

I installed key-chord by adding to spacemacs extra packages.

Then add the recommended function from org-roam docs in to my config.

OK, so that works OK too. If I type [[ quickly, I can then start typing the name of the note and get autocompletion.

I think both of those ways work. I’ll stick with the one from the docs.
