Now, as of 2023-05-17§

”’ ID: Agora3 Jayu EleuthĆ©ria Creation: 2022-07-10 Last modification: 2023-05-17 ”’

This is a Now page. I use it to share what I’m currently doing, feeling, and thinking about. [[Derek Sivers]] started [[this trend]].

Now, as of 2023-05-17§

Life has been truthfully hectic these last months. Between my still unfinished undergraduate thesis, the many projects I’m involved with, and many other aspects of my life, I’ve been juggling with flaming torches. I have no idea if I’m succeeding or not. Only time will tell.

On a more hopeful note, my [[Zettelkasten]] is finally up! There’s not much to it right now, yet slowly and surely it shall grow.

Zettelkasten’s Now§

While working on my [[undergraduate thesis]], I took the time to read [[Thomas Kuhn]]‘s [[The structure of scientific revolutions]] and made a few remarks regarding [[Kuhn’s concept of exemplars and a few problems surrounding Lacanian psychoanalysis’ scientificity and transmissibility]].

Watching [[Key the Metal Idol]] also resulted in [[a few remarks about its nƤive humanism]]. It’s still a WIP.

This is my Now page. From time to time, not often, I shall update this page. It says what I am generally about currently. Last updated: 2023-04-30 2023-06-13 2023-06-17 2023-08-02 2024-01-01 2024-09-24 2026-01-08.

University

Finished the Bachelor's programme at Kazan Federal University with honors (red diploma). Betula was my diploma work, a continuation from an earlier coursework.

After that, enrolled back to KFU for Master's, but to a different institute for an unusual programme called ā€œDigital Leadershipā€, which is basically economics for programmers. Exactly what I needed. One semester after, I'm quite content with my choice.

Dayjob

A year in MIND has passed. I feel I'm getting better as a programmer. Working full time and doing university stuff at the same time is very tiresome, I'm basically tired all the time.

Travel

Didn't have much time to travel since the company meetup in Moscow last January. I did go to my hometown a couple times, of course. Looking forward to the next meetup and to the many travels I planned for the year.

Programming

With nlnet now funding Betula, I've found new powers to develop. Had especially productive Winter holidays in this regard.

Art

Didn't have much time for that. Still creating a secret aronia zine.

Plans for 2026

  • The travels

  • The marvels

  • Finish the funding successfully

  • Release the zine at long last

  • Declutter digital information

now
We must return to the ways of old
The ways of prehistory

Of being a creature, embracing life as the here and now
Survival and running

But with modern technology
Cities wipe our minds
Keep us occupied
Keep us in rows

And who is to say that rows are evil?
They aren’t
They’re just a remnant of how we evolved
From wild
To rows

But now
The rows have allowed us to develop further
To develop curves

And space
And time
And math
And the study of everything

So we can return to the way it was
But with what we have discovered

So eat an apple
Go on a run
Scream into the wind
Do a cartwheel
Draw a picture
Write a song
Grocery shop and grow a garden
Embrace one another
And live in the

I drank my coffee with honey this morning. Weird tasting. That is, honey and sugar, although both being "sweeteners", definitely taste different. Also, a teaspoon of honey seems to be much sweeter than the equivalent amount of sugar.

(yes, we ran out of sugar)

Also, our apartment is cold, and it started snowing again in Ottawa last night (that weather doo-hickey in the upper right hand corner is correct - below zero once again). On Sunday, Kate and I walked around everywhere and had to carry our jackets because it was over 20 degrees! When we got home, we spent the rest of the day in shorts.

I just went to put on thicker socks, and debate putting on a sweater instead of just this hoody. Yes, the rads are off for the season, and Mark and were just discussing yesterday our plans to buy air conditioners for this summer…

Whatever happened to your link directory of Mac stuff?
Well, it’s still around. The weblinks module is a little bit crazy mainly because I’m using a multiple-hierarchy taxonomy. But, there are a few things in the Mac category.

Also, the Mac OS X book has some stuff. Technically, everything in the Mac category of weblinks should be added to the book outline as well. It’s on the to-do list.

Finally, you can of course just sort by the Mac category, but this will retrieve articles, opinions, and everything (including this post).

Oh, and the link that Lloyd was looking for was EveryMac — the place to look for specs and pricing of virtually all Mac-stuff, ever.

[image:469,left,5]I’ve installed the Drupal image module. It enables personal galleries (here’s mine). There is an option when adding an image asking whether or not to restrict it to your personal gallery. If enabled, the iamge is only visible there. As well, uploaded images can be used in posts using a special syntax.

For example, a thumbnail of this picture can be inserted directly into this blog post by entering something like [ image : node_id ] (where node_id is the id of the image node).

The complete list of options are this: [Ā imageĀ :Ā node_id,(left|right|top|middle|bottom|absmiddle|texttop|baseline),hspace,vspace,border ]

Everything is optional except for node_id.

To upload your own image(s), hit the create link and select image. There are only two categories defined right now — Misc and People. People is where I just uploaded all my "profile" pics — pictures that I have in my address book for people. If you don’t want your picture there, let me know, and I’ll delete it.

  • meme
  • Personal

So, I've so far resisted any sort of "tagging" meme where one gets tagged by another blogger to write about something. Memes, of course, mutate along the way. I was first tagged back in February of this year, by Ton. Back then, it was a mere 4 things.

Then Travis got me, with 5 things. Travis did a fantastic job of his write up…which makes me believe this is why people do these tag things in the first place…hoping for a "Travis".

Now Arienna thinks it's six things.

That's a lot of tagging :P

I think I'll stick to the "5 Things You Don't Know About Me".

  1. I think of myself as German Canadian. Both my parents are German. I was born in Vancouver, but spoke German before I spoke English. My parents and I originally lived in the West End, when it really was still called Robson Strasse (Strasse means "street" in German). There were (and still are) quite a few German families on Bowen Island, where I lived since I was 4. What does being German Canadian mean? It means you know where the Freybe Outlet store is, and you get to open your presents on Christmas Eve. None of this getting up early stuff for us…

  2. I read. A lot. It goes in spurts, but if I have a nice hard sci-fi novel to tear into, I can read really fast (Greg Bear's Darwin's Radio and Darwin's Children in the past 36 hours).

  3. I cook. A lot. I flipped a coin between going to cooking school and going to university. I ended up at Capilano College and then started at UVic thinking I was going to be a marine biologist and swim with dolphins. Note: an undergraduate biology student does *not* swim with dolphins. My mom thinks I put too many complicated spices in thing, but the wives enjoy it when I cook their meals.

I started cooking when I was about 12, since I was the first one home in the evenings. Eventually, I was cooking for dinner parties and such and just telling my mom that the recipe I was making was something I "read in a magazine". Except, I would just make them up, and they pretty much turned out most of the time.

  4. I have a personal site that's a weird aggregator of me interacting with all sorts of external services; it's even got recipes

  5. 13 years ago (1993 - 1994), I sailed around the South Pacific on a tall ship called the S/V Concordia on a program called Class Afloat (think White Squall only co-ed and with a bigger boat). It left me with a lot of friends and experiences, and part of my drive is thinking about how to get back to some of those places I visited. Also, I need a new "big story" :P

And this is the point where I'm supposed to tag someone else. Someone in my daily blog wanderings ended up saying something like "I think I'll be a leaf in this graph". I was thinking of just stealing that, but I actually think this is a good method to make you go check out two other people that floated up into my thoughts in the last little while. Jame Healy is one of them, and the other is Ben Wong over at Mostly Geek. Both are Vancouverites, and I think you'll find lots of interesting things to read over there.

Remember the DG-100-GPS? That cheap data logger that I've been really bad at finding the time to use consistently? Jaako left a comment letting me know that he got the DG-100 working on the Mac:

Hey Boris! Wanted to drop you a line and let you know that I managed to get a pretty decent solution to the DG-100 / Mac issue. The key lies in Mirko Parthey's dg100.c script he wrote as a basis for implementation into GPSBabel. I made some tweaks to his original code and added a GPX output mode and have a pretty reliable command line interface for the DG-100. Check it out ( + the relaunch of my blog ) at Blog-Shmog.com and let me know if you have any luck!

I know that Richard already followed his instructions and got it working as well. Richard has been doing a great job of geo tagging his photos. Check out his map on Flickr. Oh, and Flickr's Places feature is AMazing. And the only way to get your pictures in Places is to either geotag them up front, or use the map feature to place them. "Manually" placing can be done in bulk and the interface is quite friendly, so even if you don't have a GPS device you can easily geotag on Flickr.

Now I have to listen to my own "call to arms" and do more geotagging myself. I should go poke the LoadMyTracks guys again…it would be great if they could adapt this DG100 script so it "just works" rather than all the compiling and C-editing…Ā

Missing you is sharp
in my serratus anterior
it feels tight and reaching somewhere around my kidneys
loose and open with pain
above my bladder
and everywhere below the diaphragm,
there is a hot medial line…
something that I would’ve once called weakness
something is
Not Right and Very Wrong
like a plant that was cut,
reaching out to send water and minerals
to a part that isn’t there
perhaps this is what propagation is
I reach out for you, feel that you’ve been cut away
So I grow the you in me
And all growth
needs pain
to force attention
to remember the structures of you
so I can build them anew
in me

Highlights§

  • Kierkegaard achieved the necessary condition of any great romantic intellectual figure, which is rejection by his own time and society.
  • Philosophy prides itself on challenging all assumptions but, oddly enough, in the 20th century it forgot to question why it asked the questions it did.
  • Rather than being an existential problem, it often became simply a logical or metaphysical one, a technical exercise in specifying the necessary and sufficient conditions for identifying one person as the same object at two different points in time.
  • Human beings are caught, he said, between two modes or ā€˜spheres’ of existence. The ā€˜aesthetic’ is the world of immediacy, of here and now. The ā€˜ethical’ is the transcendent, eternal world. We can’t live in both, but neither fulfils all our needs since ā€˜the self is composed of infinitude and finitude’, a perhaps hyperbolic way of saying that we exist across time, in the past and future, but we are also inescapably trapped in the present moment.
  • So the world has increasingly embraced the ā€˜aesthetic’. But this fails to satisfy us, too. If the moment is all we have, then all we can do is pursue pleasurable moments, ones that dissolve as swiftly as they appear, leaving us always running on empty, grasping at fleeting experiences that pass. The materialistic world offers innumerable opportunities for instant gratification without enduring satisfaction and so life becomes a series of diversions. No wonder there is still so much vague spiritual yearning in the West: people long for the ethical but cannot see beyond the aesthetic.
  • In evocative aphorisms, Kierkegaard captured this sense of being lost, whichever world we choose: ā€˜Infinitude’s despair is to lack finitude, finitude’s despair is to lack infinitude.’ Kierkegaard thus defined what I take to be the central puzzle of human existence: how to live in such a way that does justice both to our aesthetic and our ethical natures.
  • He thought that the figure of Christ — a man-made God, wholly finite and wholly infinite at the same time — was the only way to make sense of the human condition, not because it explains away life’s central paradox but because it embodies it.
  • Christianity is an oxymoron, given that the Jesus of the Gospels spent so much time criticising the clerics of his day and never established any alternative structures.
  • Kierkegaard showed that taking religion seriously is compatible with being against religion in almost all its actual forms, something that present-day atheists and believers should note.
  • Kierkegaard would undoubtedly have been both amused and appalled at what passes for debate about religion today. He would see how both sides move in herds, adhering to a collectively formed opinion, unwilling to depart from the local consensus. Too many Christians defend what happens to pass for Christianity in the culture at the time, when they should be far more sceptical that their churches really represent the teachings of their founder. Too many atheists are just as guilty of rallying around totems such as Charles Darwin and the scientific method, as though these were the pillars of the secular outlook rather than merely the current foci of its attention.
  • Kierkegaard insisted on going beyond this objective/subjective choice, recognising that honest intellectual work requires a sincere attempt to see things as they are and an authentic recognition of how one’s own nature, beliefs and biases inevitably shape one’s perceptions.
  • What Kierkegaard understood clearly was that there is no neutral ā€˜objective’ point of view from which alternative ways of living and understanding the world can be judged. Rather, you need to get inside a philosophy to really see its attractions and limitations.
  • The most complete, objective point of view is not one that is abstracted from the subjective: it is one that incorporates as many subjective points of view as are relevant and needed.
  • A detached reason that cannot enter into the viewpoints of others cannot be fully objective because it cannot access whole areas of the real world of human experience. Kierkegaard taught me the importance of attending to the internal logic of positions, not just how they stand up to outside scrutiny.
  • In a pluralist world, there is no hope of understanding people who live according to different values if we only judge them from the outside, from what we imagine to be an objective point of view but is really one infused with our own subjectivity.
  • For Kierkegaard, irony was the means by which we could engage in serious self-examination without hubris or arrogance: ā€˜what doubt is to science, irony is to personal life’.

[[Patriotic Millionaires]].

[[An annual ā€œwealth taxā€ on those with fortunes of more than $5m (Ā£3.7m) could raise more than $2.52tr]].

That would be enough, they said, to ā€œlift 2.3 billion people out of poverty; make enough vaccines for the world and deliver universal healthcare and social protection for all the citizens of low and lower-middle-income countries (3.6 billion people).

The proposed tax would see those with more than $5m pay 2%, rising to 3% for those with more than $50m and a 5% rate for dollar billionaires.

Open Climate Then and Now§

[[Open Climate]].

Outlines 5 areas in which open practices (e.g. open: science, hardware, knowledge, infrastructure) can strengthen climate action.

1. Reclaim a robust knowledge commons§

The climate crisis is also an information crisis. The knowledge commons can be an important tool to fight back.

The open movement can help clean up the information environment by:

  • Foregrounding the viewpoints of frontline communities. […]
  • Distributing information in formats that communities need and understand. […]
  • Improving the quality of the information, not just the quantity. […]

Chimes with [[political education]]. [[Knowledge commoning]].

2. Address the environmental impact of digital infrastructures§

The open movement can reduce the environmental impact of technology by:

  • Leveraging openness as a tool for replicability, transparency, and impact. […]
  • Aiming open source at the target of achieving a fossil-fuel-free Internet by 2030. […]
  • Foreground the perspective of indigenous communities because sustainability depends on social arrangements. […]

For sure, reducing the impact of technology itself is import. I would place things such as [[right to repair]] in this bracket also. The openness of repair information.

3. Downscale climate science to local levels§

Going from highly centralized science or policymaking to communities that can act requires attention to the needs at the most localized possible level, whether by using local languages or training local communities.

Sounds like [[subsidiarity]], I am strongly onboard with this.

The open movement can empower the smallest possible policy-maker by:

  • Integrating local information and knowledge with climate risk and forecasting. […]
  • Supporting shifts in individual choices and personal knowledge. […]
  • Recognizing the importance of ā€œopennessā€ beyond licensing and open technology. […]

4. Faciliate free access to climate information§

5. Offer value to other movements by operating intersectionally§

    • The allure of glitchy feedback is probably what draws a lot of people into crummy ā€œcodependentā€ relationships in which they aren’t treated well. (LocationĀ 180)
    • Whether or not positive feedback might in theory be more effective in certain cases, negative feedback turns out to be the bargain feedback, the best choice for business, so it appears more often in social media. (LocationĀ 245)
    • Negative emotions such as fear and anger well up more easily and dwell in us longer than positive ones. It takes longer to build trust than to lose trust. Fight-or-flight responses occur in seconds, while it can take hours to relax. (LocationĀ 246)
    • If you want to motivate high value and creative outcomes, as opposed to undertaking rote training, then reward and punishment aren’t the right tools at all. There’s a long line of researchers studying this topic, starting with Abraham Maslow in the 1950s and continuing with many others, including Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (joined by writers like Daniel Pink). Instead of applying the simple mechanisms of behaviorism, we need to think about people in more creative ways, if we expect them to be creative. We need to foster joy, intellectual challenge, individuality, curiosity, and other qualities that don’t fit into a tidy chart. (LocationĀ 257)
    • Social media is biased, not to the Left or the Right, but downward. The relative ease of using negative emotions for the purposes of addiction and manipulation makes it relatively easier to achieve undignified results. (LocationĀ 278)
    • You might be targeted before an election with weird posts that have proven to bring out the inner cynic in people who are similar to you, in order to reduce the chances that you’ll vote. (LocationĀ 442)
    • Prohibitions are engines of corruption that split societies into official and criminal sectors. Laws work best when they are reasonably aligned with incentives. (LocationĀ 488)
    • Here I have put forward a hypothesis that our problem is not the internet, smartphones, smart speakers, or the art of algorithms. Instead, the problem that has made the world so dark and crazy lately is the BUMMER machine, and the core of the BUMMER machine is not a technology, exactly, but a style of business plan that spews out perverse incentives and corrupts people. (LocationĀ 507)
    • BUMMER isn’t great as a long-term business strategy. (LocationĀ 514)
    • Similarly, a BUMMER addict eventually becomes preternaturally quick to take offense, as if hoping to get into a spat. (LocationĀ 552)
    • But I’ve observed that since social media took off, assholes are having more of a say in the world. (LocationĀ 600)
    • It’s not helpful to think of the world as being divided into assholes and non-assholes, or if you prefer, trolls and victims. (LocationĀ 609)
    • Each of us has an inner troll. (LocationĀ 610)
    • I don’t know how far that goes with wolves, but it’s dramatic in people. When people are locked in a competitive, hierarchical power structure, as in a corporation, they can lose sight of the reality of what they’re doing because the immediate power struggle looms larger than reality itself. (LocationĀ 622)
    • In the scientific community and among virtually all nations in the world, there’s a consensus that we must confront it, and yet a small but powerful group of businesspeople and politicians don’t buy it. They perceive the science of climate change as a plot to attack their wealth and power. That’s an absurd notion, an absurdity that’s only possible when you’re locked into understanding the world solely in terms of human power struggles, to the exclusion of the larger reality. (LocationĀ 625)
    • When the Solitary/Pack switch is set to Pack, we become obsessed with and controlled by a pecking order. We pounce on those below us, lest we be demoted, and we do our best to flatter and snipe at those above us at the same time. (LocationĀ 635)
    • The only constant basis of friendship is shared antagonism toward other packs. (LocationĀ 638)
    • There would no longer be a way to guess the number of beans because the power of diversity will have been compromised. When that happens, markets can no longer offer utility to the world. (LocationĀ 654)
    • Solitary. Democracy fails when the switch is set to Pack. Tribal voting, personality cults, and authoritarianism are the politics of the Pack setting. (LocationĀ 668)
    • It might sound like a contradiction at first, but it isn’t; collective processes make the best sense when participants are acting as individuals. (LocationĀ 670)
    • In BUMMERland, it seems as if every little comment either turns into a contest for total personal invalidation and destruction, or else everyone has to get all nicey-nicey and fake. (LocationĀ 701)
    • On BUMMER you have to fight gravity just to be decent. (LocationĀ 706)
    • What we need is anything that’s real beyond social pretensions that people can focus on instead of becoming assholes. (LocationĀ 709)
    • Look into yourself. Seriously, are you being as kind as you want to be? (LocationĀ 719)
    • Our peer groups influence us profoundly when we’re young, but that remains true throughout life. If your extended peer group contains a lot of fake people, calculated to manipulate you, you are likely to be influenced without even realizing it. This is a difficult truth to accept, but because of the importance of social perception, it is true to at least a small degree that you have been living a fake life yourself. BUMMER is making you partially fake. (LocationĀ 756)
    • Fake people are a cultural denial-of-service attack. (LocationĀ 760)
    • the going rate for fake people on Twitter in early 2018 was $225 for the first 25,000 fake followers. (LocationĀ 767)
    • Media forms that promote truth are essential for survival, but the dominant media of our age do no such thing. (LocationĀ 839)
    • The speed, idiocy, and scale of false social perceptions have been amplified to the point that people often don’t seem to be living in the same world, the real world, anymore. (LocationĀ 993)
    • when everyone is on their phone, you have less of a feeling for what’s going on with them. Their experiences are curated by faraway algorithms. You and they can’t build unmolested commonality unless the phones are put away. (LocationĀ 1003)
    • Empathy2 is the fuel that runs a decent society. Without it, only dry rules and competitions for power are left. (LocationĀ 1011)
    • I remember when the internet was supposed to bring about a transparent society. The reverse has happened. (LocationĀ 1076)
    • (Be aware that when you do that, it might have an impact on your feeds; you might be tagged—not necessarily explicitly, but implicitly, by association—as a potentially depressible person. Online manipulators might use algorithms that automatically try to take advantage of that, and it might make you depressed.) (LocationĀ 1105)
    • BUMMER places me in a subordinate position. It’s structurally humiliating. (LocationĀ 1134)
    • How can you be authentic when everything you read, say, or do is being fed into a judgment machine? (LocationĀ 1185)
    • Being free is what propelled these services to become so big so fast. It is also the foundation of the BUMMER business plan that has been so destructive, that has turned most of the human race into part-time lab rats. (LocationĀ 1257)
    • The movement to make software free was founded on an honest mistake. It became dogma that if software wasn’t free, then it couldn’t be open, meaning no one but the owner would see the source code, so no one would understand what the software really did. (LocationĀ 1266)
    • Ultimately, only one method of reconciliation was identified: the advertising business model. Advertising would allow search to be free, music to be free, and news to be free. (That didn’t mean that musicians or reporters got a piece of the pie, for the techies considered them replaceable.) (LocationĀ 1297)
      • Note: Musicians and movies are especially replaceable because the content distributors can largely determine which content will be popular.
    • We’re talking about an industry that supports some of the richest companies the world has ever known, and it’s all driven by data that comes from people who are often being told that they’re about to be obsolete, that they’ll need to go on the public dole with a basic income system. It just isn’t right to tell people they are no longer valuable to society when the biggest companies exist only because of data that comes from those same people. (LocationĀ 1327)
    • We’re pretending that the people who know how to translate are obsolete, when in truth they’re still needed. Isn’t it some kind of sin to tell someone that they’re obsolete when it isn’t true? (LocationĀ 1341)
    • BUMMER ultimately fuels loudmouthed assholes and con artists more than it does the initial groups of hip, young, educated idealists, because in the longer term BUMMER is more suited to sneaky, malevolent manipulation than to any other purpose. (LocationĀ 1459)
    • BUMMER studies early idealists and catalogs their quirks by its very nature, without an evil plan. The results have the unintended effect of lining idealists up so that they can be targeted with shitposts that statistically make them just a little more irritable, a little less able to communicate with dissimilar people, so a little more isolated, and after all that, a little less able to tolerate moderate or pragmatic politics. (LocationĀ 1461)
    • BUMMER undermines the political process and hurts millions of people, but so many of those very same people are so addicted that all they can do is praise BUMMER because they can use it to complain about the catastrophes it just brought about. (LocationĀ 1464)
    • BUMMER is neither liberal nor conservative; it is just pro-paranoia, pro-irritability, and pro–general assholeness. (LocationĀ 1534)
    • A year after the election, the truth started to trickle out. It turns out that some prominent ā€œblackā€ activist accounts were actually fake fronts for Russian information warfare. Component F. The Russian purpose was apparently to irritate black activists enough to lower enthusiasm for voting for Hillary. To suppress the vote, statistically. (LocationĀ 1604)
    • BUMMER makes more money when people are irritated and obsessed, divided and angry—and that suited Russian interests perfectly. BUMMER is a shit machine. It transforms sincere organizing into cynical disruption. It’s inherently a cruel con game. (LocationĀ 1627)
    • what they’ve experienced in their feeds, while the reverse is also true; the empathy others might offer you is challenged because you can’t know the context in which you’ll be understood. You’re probably becoming more of an asshole, but you’re also probably sadder; another pair of BUMMER disruptions that are mirror images. Your ability to know the world, to know truth, has been degraded, while the world’s ability to know you has been corrupted. Politics has become unreal and terrifying, while economics has become unreal and unsustainable: two sides of the same coin. (LocationĀ 1663)
    • So BUMMER intrinsically enacts a structural, rather than an ontological, change in the nature of free will. (LocationĀ 1696)

  • The I.I. is people coming together online and thinking about more organized forms of exchange, collaboration, and a new type of IRL. It’s a matter of identity to some of us. Encounters have changed lives and careers…
  • Those around the I.I. show an active interest in transcending traditional disciplinary boundaries — science, design, philosophy, government, etc. — to create new combinations that are more useful for how we actually live, work and think today. We seem to prioritize open discussion and collaboration across differences, and establishing projects that can address real-world questions better.
  • The I.I. is active at self-curating editorial content, by us and for us, based on values of free and participatory critical thinking. Our online activity is partly about combining content from a variety of different outlets, with ourselves being our own quality assurance.
  • We are inquisitive people who trust inquisitive people, even in situations when this is impractical.
  • There is an observable effort to start discussions about changing norms, hierarchies and roles within society. We seem to agree that social equality cannot be achieved unless we find a widely accepted way to talk about it.
  • We know that real breakthroughs come from original combinations, unexpected patterns and transplantable knowledge. We think multidisciplinary lives should be celebrated!
  • We seem determined to build our careers, relationships and selves step-by-step, iterating as we proceed, and looking to be proven wrong when needed.
  • The I.I. believes people are many-layered and full of promise — creatures who strive to do good, to be useful and to help their fellow humans.

What Does Class Mean Now?§

URL : https://novaramedia.com/2023/09/15/novara-fm-what-does-class-mean-now/

We’re going back to basics on Novara FM this autumn with a series about the big one: [[class]]. What does it mean to look at the world through the lens of class in the 2020s, an era of precarious work, rising inequality and elusive social mobility?

Three classy thinkers join FM to investigate: political researcher Nihal ElAasar, cultural critic Juliet Jacques and writer and Verso editor John Merrick. They begin the series with an introspective session on the meaning of class today, drawing on their very different upbringings in Egypt, the home counties and the north of England.

I didn’t really come out of this knowing what class means now. Other than: there’s a difference between the strict Marxist definition of class (based primarily on where you stand regarding ownership of the means of production), and the general definition of social class. That latter, noone really seems to agree on a definition.
