Although I do find the time to brush my teeth and take showers, so perhaps I should find the time to write for just five minutes or so a day. It’s just trying harder.

Now I’ve had the idea of titling my posts after the date in which I write them, and keep an actual sort of diary here. I know, it’s not a new idea at all, that’s essentially what a blog is, but up to now I had thought about this blog as more of a collection of ideas and random occurrences than an actual diary in this structured sense.

Nice article from Mike Caulfield on blogs, wikis, and whether we could/should try to merge them into one thing.

Interestingly, Mike thinks they should be kept distinct. However, it does feel like his analysis of wikis is not thinking of them as personal wikis. Some of the values Mike mentions for wikis (like minimization of personal voice) maybe applied to the original wiki concept, but do not apply to personal wikis.

Yesterday I attended a very fun pop-up IndieWebCamp session on streams, blogs and wikis.

Around 25 people joined online over the course of the session.

It was a wide-ranging discussion on lots of wiki-adjacent topics. One of the things I really liked was the plurality of both the reasons for having a wiki, and of the tools people use to do it. Very IndieWeb.

Some parts of it that stuck in my brain:

• what actually are personal wikis? What do people use them for?

  • [[second brains]] / [[exobrains]]
• mind maps, [[memory palaces]]
  • historical examples of externalising memories, like walkabouts

There was way more discussed than that. I think given the interest and the breadth of topics, it would be fun to get together semi-regularly.

spacemacs php layer§

The [[spacemacs]] php layer bundles together lots of nice little features. I’m not sure which bits comes from where, but currently just the basic usage of SPC m g g to jump to definition is super handy already for spelunking around in vendor libraries.

PHPUnit command/package is not installed§

Was getting this error in [[Emacs]] when trying to run [[PHPUnit]] tests via phpunit.el. It’s possible to change the location of the phpunit executable via phpunit-set-dir-local-variable, but I wondered why it wasn’t working out of the box (when it was on another project). Turns out that a long time ago this particular project had the bin-dir setting in composer.json set to something else, rather than the standard vendor/bin (see https://getcomposer.org/doc/articles/vendor-binaries.md).

I just changed it back to the standard location, and phpunit worked fine again.

• More and more I would like to learn [[Racket]].

• I’m encountering increasingly frequent slowdowns and annoyances in [[Emacs]] of late. I think mostly when I’m working in [[org-roam]]. It seems pretty buggy - possibly just due to my config. But it doesn’t find files that I know exist, it slows down massively when processing the DB.

  • Ah - so not finding files might have been due to my use of a relative path in dir-locals.
  • I seem to have to keep on running org-roam-db-clear and org-roam-db-build-cache of late. Hope I’ve got it sorted now.
  • I am also getting big, annoying interruptions from this background process that runs to update the DB. org-roam-db-update-method is set to 'idle-timer, and org-roam-db-update-idle-seconds by default is set to 2. I think I’ll try changing the method first to 'immediate. If that is still no good, I’ll change back to idle timer but with a increased number of seconds.
  • immediate works a bit better for me, because I’m more likely to naturally pause after saving a file, so the brief processing time doesn’t bother me as much.
  • Still, would be good to see if the time for updating the DB could be reduced.

I’m finding it increasingly frustrating how I can’t use the agora at the day job; I run a copy of it for my own purposes, but I can’t use obsidian for corp note taking, so there’s some friction involved in switching back and forth.   • Nominally it’s about [[degrowth]] but it’s starting off with a chapter about the [[Anthropocene]], and then a chapter on the origins of [[Capitalism]].

  • Particularly interesting is the description of a move from a [[Relational ontology]] (as also mentioned in [[Free, Fair and Alive]]!) to [[dualism]].

• Read: [[Problems with ecosocialism]]

  • Gives some critiques of ecosocialism. I don’t necessarily agree, but worth a read and a think about. Mainly: not enough concrete ideas on actual transition (perhaps true, also recognised by ecosocialists themselves); too much focus on the social, not enough on the eco (I’d disagree with that from what I’ve seen); capitalism is too embedded to overthrow it, need to work within current system (kind of reformist argument).

• The [[planetary boundaries]] framework defines nine boundaries for the planet, and as of 2023 six of them have been overshot.

• Beautiful start to the day thanks to [[AG]]!
  • Oncall, got paged at 9am — not too early thankfully. And I had left the bedroom so AG could sleep through it as I hoped.

  • Still - good stuff.

• Started listening to the masterclass for week 4, on the digital trade agenda.

  • The point about why corporations love trade deals is really enlightening - easy way for them to bypass democratic discussion; lobby to get their way; once a trade deal is made, it’s very hard to change.

• Learning about ecology on Kinnu, I realise that it’s a great source of ideas for thinking in systems.

  • It’s the ultimate system, basically.
  • I think [[The Systems View of Life]] would be about this to some degree.

• Well, I’m here finally :)
  • I received my second keyboard and I installed it on the desk with [[Paramita]].
  • Typing on it feels amazing, and the workstation is now set up in a way that I think will entice me to write more often and for longer periods before context switching.
  • I find that, when I’m typing on a laptop keypad, the constant availability of the trackpad makes me context switch more often, as I react impulsively to notifications for example. When I am in this typing position, switching to a different context requires me to:
    • Reach out for the mouse, which is 30cm away.
    • Use a combination like Meta + hjkl to move to a different window using my [[window manager]]‘s shortcut, which usually means I’d be focusing to a different window that I had decided I wanted to work on (as it’s on my workspace)
    • Learn the shortcut for ‘react to last notification’, which I don’t know and I don’t intend to learn today :)
  • Now only remains the task of remembering what I want to do, which means updating my priority list and gathering an intent to follow it.

  • elfeed-org makes it easy to add feeds and organise them. I’m trying Ton’s way of organising feeds to begin.
