Prompted by a conversation yesterdayโฆ
I sometimes think probably some appreciation comes from listening to the music in computer games as a kid. (And, maybe, for the more experimental stuff, the screech of the tape loader on the [[Amstrad]]โฆ And the dial-up modem later onโฆ)
The first electronic songs that I can remember? I remember my brother had a tape called ‘The Ultimate Rave‘, from 92. So that would have been around when I was 10. I remember the Charly song from that, although the album version is way better. I listened to Experience a lot. He also had ‘Rave 92‘, I still remember a bunch of tracks from that fondlyโฆ On A Ragga Tip, The Bouncer, Ravin’ I’m Raving.
So then The Prodigy, The Shamen, a bit later the Chemical Brothers. I have a distinct memory at some point of watching No Limits by 2 Unlimited on some music programme when at my grandparents house.
My Mum liked Orbital, so we had a bunch of their early albums around - Snivilisation, Insides, the brown one.
At some point (around college time I guess?), I started getting into IDM. Warp (Autechre, Boards of Canada) and Skam (Jega) being the labels that kicked me off. Where did that come from? I think that was me going off into my own territory at that point, possibly with some assist from Michael. I distinctly remember teaching myself how to [[make websites]] while listening to Tri Repetae on repeat. College? Pre-uni?
It’s mostly been the more IDM side of things since then.
I started my wiki with pretty long pages, lots of thoughts bunched together. I didn’t think that much about structure, as I just wanted somewhere to chuck my ideas, and it worked great. After building up it up for about a month or so, though, I started feeling the need for something that makes it easier to link concepts together.
That tends to then lead you to towards things like [[zettelkasten]] and the philosophy of [[tiddlers]]. Breaking everything up into small chunks that can be linked together (‘[[collecting the dots]]‘).
I like the way that [[TiddlyWiki]] and [[FedWiki]] do it. [[Roam]] seems to be the latest hot new thing along those lines. And I found [[org-roam]] has helped with this for my own setup.
There is much to be said for the zettelkasten / tiddler approach. But - also I think the long player is vital too. The occassional [[connecting of the dots]] into longer-forms (AKA [[articles]]). It’s a type of path or a thread of your ideas, made sense of and hand-curated at a point in time by yourself, to share with others. Sitting somewhere between the garden and the stream? It’s kind of an entry point into your garden that your share into the stream.
Lately, I’ve been hitting a rich seam of classic articles out there, 5 years old or more, that would have been lost in time if just in a stream, and replanted or paved over by now if just part of the garden.
(And, side note, some of my wiki pages are still pretty long.)
In a way, in terms of [[audience]], I currently think of my personal wiki as ‘me first’, although not ‘me only’. A personal wiki could be completely private, and that’s a totally legit use case. However for me having it public has a big benefit - sharing my ideas and learning from feedback is a motivator to writing for me. But I think of it as ‘me first’, in that if there was some pressure to make it really polished, I would probably hardly ever write in it.
I think the important thing is whatever motivates you to write, at the same time as removing the friction. That probably changes from person to person.
Over the last 7 years, [[Spotify]] has earned me 4.3% of what [[Bandcamp]] has. Over the last 3 months it’s 1.6%. Getting playlisted by the Spotify lords and heard by 50,000 people is worth as much as ~20 people deciding to pay a fiver for a release on Bandcamp.

[[Phil Jones]] has a page on his wiki about a [[web renewal]]: http://thoughtstorms.info/view/WebRenewal
The rediscovery of the same types of community and values that excited us at TheDawnOfWiki.
Hopefully a rediscovery that is long-lived?
That word ‘rediscovery’ chimes with the article that was in the MIT Technology Review recently: Digital gardens let you cultivate your own little bit of the internet. It’s a nice article, but is pretty much describing home pages from way back when, like they’re a new thing.
It’s not the hyped-up search for WebThreePointZero or TheNextBigThing. Instead it’s a return to seeking something of the openness and freedom that has been lost with the rise of giants like Twitter, Facebook and Google.
I hope the openness and freedom comes back and remains. I have a bit of a worry that for example Roam Research is going to become something like the Facebook of the personal wiki.

it's hard to justify getting rid of things that have no utility to others. i know i don't like those t shirts, but wearing them means i wear the ones i care about less, and i can wear the ones i care about when i'm out! they also won't be well served elsewhere.
things should be weighed in terms of utility, time spent and life wasted.
i waste far too much of my life doing things i shouldn't be doing, or not doing things that i should. i've been procrastinating on a bunch of things and it's difficult for me to make meaningful progress. but it'll get done !! i'm making progress after cleaning things up tonight. listing old things to make room for the new stuff
article a change in the software ecosystem: ignoring practices and still making interesting work making purpose built software; it's so easy to build applications targeting just dozens of users, but doesn't make sense for large school applications unless the individual takes them on as passion projects not worrying about scale is incredibly valuable; as scaling problems aren't inherently fatal in most applications, there's no reason to really worry about them until the issue is relevant. the social energy and local importance of applications is so powerful - and not being able to scale sometimes is beneficial, preventing problems and issues and enabling others through catering to an audience.
really, 'situated software' is refusing to prematurely choose a target audience, building it for the audience that's immediately apparent and expanded to meet demand in the future. targeting specific groups makes those groups feel more important, and demants more specific, better quality feedback!
easily accessible testing
incredible feedback locally
super fast iterated design based on this feedback; it's a much, much smaller loop
the community cares so so much more, making the work actually more important - face strong responses rather than indifference, closed tab, whatever
the smaller the circle, the more that the developer can assume about the users; i.e. they recognize icons x and y, certain error messages, etc.
the application must be useful to the community; the community must be useful to the application. "reputational capital is easier to accumulate in smaller and more closed social systems"
"software for your mom": applications should first be personal, built for one, and used intimately.
jake - build software for yourself, and only for yourself to start. expand it when interest is shown and keep going after that : )

Think of all the local councils in the world, imagine if they all used something like [[LibreOffice]]. Some of their IT budget (i.e. public money) would go on using and improving [[libre software]]. Maybe they could work with local [[tech coops]] to work on the codebase. Money gets invested locally, code improvements can be used globally. That amount of distributed labour, the libre offerings would easily surpass the proprietary offerings.
Perhaps [[citizen participation platform]]s are a means to facilitate [[Libertarian municipalism]]. Insomuch as they support assemblies, debates, participatory budgeting, etc, at the municipal level.

identify with problem - deep focus is so hard to find. too many distractions most effective people are the most effective at switching contexts - completely focusing on one thing and tuning everything else out. i can do this when i'm working, but whenever i'm not heavily invested it feels so difficult to invest, and when i am heavily invested work pervades the rest of my life. such a prolonged, forced intensity is not sustainable for a serious amount of time!
only focus for very short period of time - spending time appearing productive is bullshit and actually ends up wasting all of our time. half productive time spent appearing productive is actually incredibly cpounterproductive - you hight as well do something - anything! many believe it's not possible to get more than four hours of good writing done during a day - and after this the mind can't properly focus. 4 hours is so much time though!! you have to commit to being both totally on and totally off - never quite in between.
rest only comes from complete relaxation - not any of this halfassed shit. it's super difficult to keep things compartmentalized, but without pure attention it's so difficult to get anything done. pure attention is driving for ourselves, while distraction is just parting out that attention to many others.
this writing isn't that good, but that's to be expected, because it's old and unseasoneed with experiences, though probably filled with much more literary knowledge than i am. orwell wants us to be in love with every detail of our lives? getting older means getting stingier with time - with whom and why - and extroversion is great but it's hard to spend lots of time with lots of others without accomodation? weird note. this definitely reads as someone yound and a bit pretentious, though with better taste in essay collections and writing than i. feels more like reading is searching for something in this essay - reading explicitly for self improvement or an escape rather than for reading itself. writing is hard!! like the explicit expression of her struggles. already synthesizing sources here, but the quotes feel scattered - not purposefUl.
new places to clear the head? try all of it! stay everywhere, get lost, hard to really talk about things you don't have the words for.
i like how perceptive i've become when reading essays like this - it means that i'm well read and understand myself well enough to both understand the lines and read through them. detecting immaturity is very important - with no meaning of immaturity other than the maturity of thoughts - as these observations inform just how much i've grown and learned about myself, even though i haven't been able to make substantial material progress. the ability to honestly criticize yourself may be the most valuable skill to have - as criticism means improvement, and being able to generate that criticism allows you to continue to generate improvement without a lot of external distraction. this could also be a sign of immaturity, though - as having lots of self criticism (honest, not deprecative) means that you haven't yet taken such criticisms to heart, so having no more criticism for yourself is a sign either that you can control yourself too little or that you focus on yourself too much. i have a headache. goodbye. ava used the liminal spaces cliche in this writing - and though i can relate to this thirst for experience no matter what the experience is, it seems silly to desire living on the brink of something rather than fully eperiencing it. we'll never find what we're looking for in each other!
just opened linkedin and saw a profile i'd seen before but who i have no real connection to. maybe it is time to quit socials
protect good habits quit before the bad habit digs in hard work doesn't feel good at the time but it feels great later stick with those who are emotionally healthy fear of rejection is very expensive always assert boundaries
we are both worthy of unconditional love - we didn't ask to be born so we should be cared for - but also full of flaws and dynamics that prove difficult to navigate. we build lives and burn them down, continuing to abandon the things we enjoy. nothing more potent than playing games you can't afford with people you don't deserve. that's the best line in this essay - an incredible one. we never learn

[[Ecodesign]] requirements for [[smartphone]]s and [[tablet]]s.
On 31 August, the first EU Ecodesign and Energy Labelling rules on mobile phones and tablets were published in the Official Journal of the European Union.
By June 2025, these products will have to be designed to be longer lasting and more repairable, marking a new era for the sustainability of electronic products.
the affordability of repair is not tackled as the price of spare parts is neither limited nor considered in the calculation of the repair index.
Given that the price of repair is one of the main factors that influences the choice of end-users to repair a product or not, it is regrettable that manufacturers will only have to indicate the pre-tax prices of the spare parts, prices to which manufacturers will not have to commit.
Furthermore, the text poorly tackles the matter of part-pairing, one of the main barriers to repairing products for end-users and independent repairers. Professional repairers will have access to information and tools to substitute and repair serialised parts, which is a significant win. However, an outright ban of part-pairing would have been a more fundamental step towards a universal right to repair, and we regret that the opportunity was not seized.
Finally, we believe the legislation could have gone further in terms of facilitating self-repair. Manufacturers will still have the option not to provide spare batteries to end-users, under the condition that they respect certain longevity and waterproofness requirements. This creates a false dichotomy between repairability and durability, especially given that a number of waterproof electronic products with replaceable batteries (including smartphones) are already on the market. We also regret the significantly limited number of spare parts available to end-users, as compared to the list that concerns professional repairers.

So now’s when we all read [[Project 2025]] and freak out I guess, and then come up with a concrete alternate plan and try to influence the timeline?
