Back in the day, centering an element was one of the trickiest things in CSS. As the language has evolved, we’ve been given lots of new tools we can use… But how do we pick the best option? When do we use Flexbox, or CSS Grid, or something else? Let's dig into it.

Dave Shea visits the future of advanced CSS design and finds it pleasing:

Anyway. The point of all this is that I put together a very basic page to serve as my test site’s root index. My primary browser is Safari, so I took the opportunity to play with the new text-shadow CSS property. (Hit the thumbnail link if you’re not using Safari). Combining this with a bit of opacity (upcoming in CSS3, supported now) a bit of generated content, and some guaranteed, non-standard font choices, I’ve caught a glimpse of where CSS is going. I like it. A lot.

No images were harmed in the making of this page, it’s all pure CSS effects. Here’s to 2011, when we might even be able to use this stuff.

2011Β§

2011 was supposed to be the year when everything changed. Protests erupted across the planet, largely as a response to the worsening economic situation that followed the 2007– 08 financial crash.

– [[Anarchist Cybernetics]]

All of the major movements that rose up in 2011 – [[Occupy]], the [[15-M Movement]] and the [[Arab Spring]].

Rather than attempting to take control of the state through elections or other means, and bring about reform and indeed transformation that way, these movements were seen to be carving out spaces of autonomy within territories governed by the state. The hope was that, eventually, these [[autonomous zone]]s would link up and federate, and through doing so lead to the state and other forces of domination withering away, not through centrally managed policies but through their increasing irrelevance to people’s lives.

– [[Anarchist Cybernetics]]

Iceland’s β€˜[[pots and pans revolution]]’ – so named because of the noise protestors made by banging kitchen implements together when they surrounded the parliament in ReykjavΓk – is, like Occupy, 15M and the Arab Spring, rooted in the financial crash of 2008

If [[Debord]] were alive today, he would almost certainly extend his analysis of [[the spectacle]] to the Internet and [[social media]]. Reading: [[The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet]]Β§

I read about a third of this a while back, then got into reading non-fiction at night. But now I’m back on fiction at night again (seems to correlate with being back at work?)

I’ve gotten back in to this pretty quickly - I really like it. It’s quite different to a lot of sci-fi - it’s much more relationship based, less action heavy. It’s quite gentle and gently-paced, so far at least, but by no means twee, and quite reflective on some of the oddities and indeed darker aspects of human nature. You get to know the characters and their feelings but the plot keeps you ticking along at the same time.

Memory/narrative. Given the importance of strategy and grand strategy in anarchist cybernetics, functionality in an alternative digital platform to support long-term planning, for example through facilitating a narrative- or memory-focused layer to communication and organising, would be essential. This would entail a shift away from the short-term stream-centred approach of mainstream social media, where users experience content as isolated posts with little relation to what has come before them or what will follow them.

    • Metal was reserved as a medium of record only for royalty.
    • Wax-on-wood boards were used frequently, and could be erased. The ‘tablet of life’ was sometimes shown as a wax-covered board where the [[god]] Nabu recorded the actions of kings and their sons. Some wax boards were attached with hinges, like a book. While papyrus was available, it was not widely used due to a lack of alphabet (as opposed to cuneiform signs.

    • Sumerian stayed as the [[language]] of [[scribes]] long after the language of [[diplomacy]] had become Assyrian. The more solid or eternal a medium of living is, the less inclined it is to change.

  • You can’t [[hunt]] flow. You simply get out of the way of it. [[Tension]] is a [[choice]].
  • Your favored [[priors]] compete with your ability to [[perceive]].
  • One step to helping [[flow]] is to notice when you stop it by noticing your [[fixations]].
  • The more you let your [[fixations]] control all of you, the less [[agency]] you feel.
  • Ongoing [[tension]] comes from a [[perception]] of a [[threat]] that has not been addressed. Accept that the threat was there and let it resolve.

  • You can’t actually analytically break down a [[technique]]. It’s just a snapshot. What works in one second does not work in the next.
  • Having [[agency]] is scary, because it means you’re [[responsible]] for what will happen.

I rethemed the wiki again because I was too jealous finding Krystal. I can’t tell if there’s some odd JS making the scrolling janky or if my phone is just throwing a fit because it’s old and has hundreds of tabs open. This was all essentially unreasonable, but didn’t take nearly as long now I have more of a clue how.

  • [[Regenerative farming]]

  • [[Open Infrastructure Map]] is absolutely fascinating. Check out all the power stations, turbines, electricity lines, gas, oil, water pipelines, etc are near you. Built on top of [[Open Street Map]] data (what an amazing project OSM is).

  • Equally fascinating is [[OSM Landuse Landcover]]. Dead interesting to compare urban areas, agriculture and wilderness. No surprise that near me there is a ton of pasture grazing and crop farming, a bit of urban sprawl, and a depressingly small amount of woodland and forest.

  • [[‘Will [[Russia]] control [[Kherson]] on 10/31/22’]] :
    • Looked at Ukraine War Map (@war.mapper) over time to get a sense of the mass spreading of both sides.
    • It seems like the Russo-Ukrainian war has become mostly a [[war]] of [[attrition]], judging by the reports of 500-1000 casualties a day on the Ukrainian side through private channels and Western estimates, and around that or more on the Russia side from [[media]] sources. All this combined with minimal shifting of [[territory]] in the last few months.
    • @auditor_ya on [[Twitter]], a seeming Ukrainian [[OSINT]] digester, has [[maps]] that echo @war.mapper. collapsed:: true
      • A Russian [[attack]] from the Donetsk area toward Avdivka used close [[air]] [[support]].
    • Low [[cost]], improvised [[drone]] technology seems to be experiencing a higher rate of [[innovation]] on the Ukrainian side.
    • Russian media (RBC) reports civilians returning to Kherson.
    • Checked @ukra_satflash on Twitter for back of the napkin advance of explosions.
    • Will Russia use nukes or other unexpected [[weapons]]?
    • Will Ukraine get better at [[strategy]]? collapsed:: true
      • Russia seems to have learned from the opening months of the war and appears to be operating more like a modern military in full swing now.
      • Ukraine has Western economic support, and its institutions have taken over many hidden logistical aspects of the war away from people who were fired up to defend their homeland- does this mean that there is less fire to fight among the population, as well?
    • By the best estimates of positions in the last month, Ukraine has held the [[high]] [[ground]] for awhile, and Russia was able to push up the coastal plains until it hit the high ground. collapsed:: true
      • The area northeast from Kherson would be a good approach, if the Dnipro is somehow taken and used amphibiously, and the flanks to the east are taken care of. collapsed:: true
        • Is this something Ukraine has the capability for?
      • Ukrainian Naval Infantry numbered around 200 in 2014. They went through a crucible against militias in Donbass. collapsed:: true
        • Can’t be more than 12,000 Marines, given the unit descriptions. So, probably 4-10,000. collapsed:: true
          • Wikipedia says ‘6,000’.
      • Can Ukraine use the Dniprovska Gulf?
    • ‘How Initiators End Their Wars: The Duration of Warfare and the Terms of Peace’:
      • Suggests that those who start wars will do worse as the [[war]] goes on, information in the war is used to decide more than information before the war, that stronger initiators are slower to update their guesses about whether they will win, and that the war will last the longer that people are [[uncertain]] about who would win.
        • Knowledge about relative [[rate]] of loss during the [[war]] seems more [[predictive]] than [[knowledge]] of [[resources]] and [[army]] size before the war started. collapsed:: true
          • It is very difficult to get any [[information]] on Ukrainian military [[deaths]], due to Ukrainian obfuscation. Private channels on the Ukrainian side suggested it was 100-500/day in May.
      • The longer the [[war]], the worse the expected outcome is for whoever started it.
    • Given that [[Russia]] started the war with [[Ukraine]] (or was it Russian [[neoreactionaries]]?), will it be more likely for Russians to take ground in the next few months?
  • Internal [[war]] that takes place far from a [[political]] [[center]] in areas with natural [[resources]] that people want internationally last longer than ones that are closer to a [[central]] [[government]]. collapsed:: true
    • Higher rebel [[military]] ability increases the chances that a civil war will be shorter.
      • How far must the army move to fight? How long can they fight for?
  • How does [[time]] interact with whatever is studied?

    • Also most generally this makes it so the convention for gathering journals is just ‘look for [[nodes]] whose [[topic]] is a time period show those that fit the current [[context]]’

  • I resigned from the [[Social.coop]] [[Community Working Group]] the day after starting the [[vote to suspend meta]] after much discussion and a quick draft done with/for the community. It felt like it was the right time to disengage after I received criticism yet again for ‘moving too fast’ despite looping in people earlier and doing what I thought was a fully reasonable pro-social action to advance discussion (start a proposal on Loomio). This after concerns were escalated by multiple community members, including to the CWG, about Social.coop feeling like less of a safe space due to our lack of visible response.
    • One of the criticisms I got amounted (paraphrasing for effect) to needing to have more pre-meetings and go slower. I am fine not having pre-meetings or anything of the sort and doing more and talking less in 2025 as far as I can (within reason), so it seemed like a good moment to finish my CWG engagement (after several years) and focus on the Tech Working Group and the Organizing Circle instead. The CWG is now well-staffed so I am not needed there anymore, which I am thankful for to the people who remain!
    • In general the negativity I had gotten used to getting from some members was a bit of an energy drain, and I realized I could use my time more constructively for the community in the other engagements I plan to keep.
  • [[Bull]] is looking great! I’m now serving it (for myself only for the time being) at https://edit.anagora.org .

  • I’m enjoying my new approach to quick access to [[Emacs]] in my work environment.

    • Not quite as intuitive or fun as using [[Guake]], but having GUI Emacs feel like an improvement.
    • I like running the terminal version of Emacs but felt like missing out on a few too many niceties that way.
    • Interesting to observe that other people either take a ‘one frame to rule them all’ or multiple frames approach.
    • I’ve currently gone for one frame, using [[Spacemacs]] layouts to switch between different contexts. I’ll see how that pans out.
    • [[Updating my approach to window management and Emacs]]
  • Hmm, interesting, whatever slowness I was experiencing regarding [[org-agenda]] rebuilding seems to have gone away with the switch back to using the GUI Emacs.

    • Or maybe it’s because I’m just running one instance again?
    • Either way, but for that to have gone away.
  • Sometimes, because I had separate multiple frames, I’d end up editing the same file in two separate frames and get conflicts around changes to the file.

    • Particular when using org-capture to add to my Tasks.org file, then editing that in another frame.
    • Avoiding this issue is a handy perk of using one frame with layouts - all the buffers are present in all layouts (I assume?), just hidden from view.
    • Noting that probably this conflict would also be avoidable if running different frames from the same server instance of Emacs.

  • Finally realized the point of standard.site. I’m now publishing standard.site documents. These link back the Quartz generated website.
    • Its purpose is a little bit like RSS for a comparison.

        • title is required, otherwise it’ll default to β€œundefined.”.
        • Frontmatter is required. If missing, it would emit errors.
    • It took me a long while to understand this. While site.standard.document records can store an editable copy of its documents. This isn’t required and its content field does not have a concrete standard. It’s intended for editor/viewing platforms like Leaflet.
      • This means that I’m not using standard.site as a means of synchronization. I already have too many forms of synchronization for the spacious nexus.
        • Though, I am just putting raw markdown for the textContent field. It could be possible to restore some data and file hierarchy with the path field. It’s not something I would rely on, but they’re here just in case the Git repositories explode, somehow.
  • Quartz generates cover images. I should use those. Done.
  • I’m getting the idea that I should try out Quartz 5.

Returning from disruption to development due to loss of water access via multiple well water system failures. But car is now operational as well, leading to increased ability to travel distances solo. Began working Goodwill cashier job a couple weeks ago. Reduces available development time and tires me out a bit. I owe deliverables to DOF and DIHG organizations. I will be reorganizing my schedule to accomodate my new job while making sure I spend appropriate time towards my deliverables. The weeds/defense zone, workshop and living space organization, processing of our recycling into goods, and preparing the soil for fall gardening is top of mind. I’ve started a new hugelkulture mound, a very large one, near the compost where raised beds used to be. I plan to use a strategy for weed control that will involve filling polystyrene(?) bags with dirt, and then leaving them around the edge of the house where I want to kill the invasive grasses for a few months. I am extremely sorrowful that we were not at home for much of monsoon season. We missed the critical moment where we would have captured the rain that could have powered many of my gardening goals… We were a bit late purchasing the gutters anyway, but then everything else happening, eroded our time away completely. I imagine we might appreciate being able to install the gutters during cooler temperatures though, so maybe it isn’t so bad. So, I want to focus on the parts of my notes today that are relating to:

  • Things we learned about well systems
  • Fall gardening activities
  • Repurposing recyclable packaging

Updating to [[YunoHost]] 11.

  • I ran the first migration from Tools > Migrations.

    • It worked fine.
  • However afterwards, I was getting the message "YunoHost API not responding.

    • I ssh’ed in to the server and ran sudo systemctl restart yunohost-api.
    • This made that message go away.
  • Next: another migration to fix python. "Repair Python app after bullseye migration"

    • apparently searx and calibreweb affected for me.
    • searx should be automatically resolved.
    • calibreweb I’ll need to run sudo yunohost app upgrade -F calibreweb
    • both appear to be fine after those actions.
  • No major issues in the ‘Diagnostics’ section.

  • Updating all the apps now then.

    • collabora ok
    • invidious failed (that’s common though…)
    • searx failed (that’s new)
      • seems to have been removed entirely for some reason.
      • installing it again has worked fine.
