I'm in Stuttgart meeting with some clients. Lots of Drupal + Jabber integration talk, and luckily ralphm is here to bring along lots of Jabber expertise.

We've been talking a lot about geolocation notification over Jabber — so users can indicate their location over Jabber. There are few (if any?) clients that support this today, so we'll probably support some short hand for testing purposes — being able to type in geoloc:[lat],[lon].

So, I was looking at JEP-0080 (geoloc) and JEP-0112 (physloc). 112 is a plain text representation of physical location, and JEP 80 is the latitude / longitude. JEP 80 also has a plain text "description" field. So…why not collapse the two? physloc could replace the current JEP 80 "description" entry…every single entry is optional, so the text field in physloc can handle the current usage of the description field. It just seems wasteful to maintain two separate JEPs for what is essentially the same information.

As well, if a service already knows the physical location, it can send it along with the geoloc — you can't derive the physical location from the geolocation, so in the current case, you would have to send two messages.

The *one* issue is the reverse: the latitude and longitude for geoloc are currently set to MUST. This means we can't send only the physical location, and leave the lat/long blank…I think this should be changed…people can send updates of either geolocation or physical location — the server side can do a geoloc lookup if needed.

BTW, I reapplied for membership in the Jabber Software Foundation — apparently the April voting had some issues.

I’m just getting back from 2 days in Seattle. In general, I’m trying to spend more time there, getting to know what’s happening in the Seattle community and seeing if Vancouver can connect more regularly (Cascadia!).

Startup Riot is actually run by a team from Atlanta, with Sanjay Parekh playing the front man. The event is run as a pitch contest, including feedback from experienced entrepreneurs as judges, plus several keynote talks and lots of opportunity for connecting with other attendees. Here’s the description and agenda for the day.

I loved the event. It was well run, it was curated1 (no service providers allowed), it had great sponsors (MailChimp, Gist, Twilio, etc.), and there was a great crowd of people there. I was surprised to meet one entrepreneur who flew in all the way from the Ukraine to attend, but having attended one Startup Riot, I can definitely see why.

Vancouver Invades§

There ended up being 10 companies from Vancouver attending. It was amazingly energizing to be in Seattle with this big Vancouver crew, and absolutely underlines that we should be spending more time working together to connect the Cascadia startup communities of Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver.

This was also the one area where I wish things had been run differently.

The Startup Riot team selects the startups that are allowed to present, and then swears them to secrecy: no one is publicly allowed to announce they are presenting. I heard about the event privately from a few startups from Vancouver who had been selected, but I never expected to show up and be immersed in a sea of Canadians.

I love & respect the cone of silence approach. It means that to find out more about the startups who are presenting, you have to make the effort to attend in person. And then the startups each have a booth as well as their pitch time, meaning you can spend time asking more questions and getting to know the team.

But the feedback I sent suggested that somehow the startups in each region be notified of who else was going.

If more people had known, I think the Vancouver area attendance would have been even higher, and would have let us organize group rides and shared accomodations and such.

The Presenting Companies§

I tweeted about each of the companies whom I saw present, which ended up being the first 10 of the day, and the last 10 of the day. I missed the middle 10 pitches because I was in deep discussion with Red Russak, who labels himself a startup concierge and runs StartupSeattle.

I have tweets about the pitches I did see, as well as the two keynotes, [over on Storify]2, as well as embedded as a slideshow here:

Pitch Quality§

One thing I can say is that the pitches were for the most part not very good. Startup pitches are relatively formulaic, especially with such a short amount of time. I first heard the tip from Paul Kedrosky to cover three broad areas — why you? why this? why now? Show the product that you’ve built. Tell your customer stories. Say that you have paying customers (cough QuoteRobot cough).

The startup pitches I saw were missing a lot of these basic items. My sense is they were under-prepared, and had clearly not had much help / feedback from people who have done early stage startup pitches before. Of course I have opinions on which of the startups seemed to have "big ideas" or were likely to succeed. Others were more vicious in their complaints3.

Ultimately, the story is about people trying to do their best to build a company, to get paid to be involved in solving a problem they are passionate about. Should all companies be big ideas? Should we all be building businesses focused on clean tech or nanotechnology? I’d rather see individuals doing startups of any kind – and learning from them – rather than working for a big company that is in need of replacing or at least reinvention.

No blame should attach to StartupRiot for this. All of those startups need to get better at explaining their story, at selling to customers, and about making people care. And they should ask for help, both from their community at large and from their peers.

StartupRiot was a chance for startups to stand up, tell their story, get some feedback from judges, and (hopefully) get some publicity and connect with people they wouldn’t have met otherwise. It definitely delivered.

See you in Atlanta§

Congratulations to Sanjay and the entire team for putting on a great event. The next event is in February 2013 in Atlanta. I’m going to try and organize a group trip to attend. If you’re a Canadian startup and are interested, drop a line in the comments.

  1. Curated: This is what StartupRiot says about curating their attendees: We prescreen all applicants before allowing them into our events. For our main events that means we screen out all service providers. We do this because it leads to a better event for you, our sponsors, and us. I love curated events, and I think this is a great policy.↩

  2. No more Storify. Consider it a TODO to go look up the original tweets. And maybe link to the archived version I host myself.↩

  3. Complaints:  There was a particularly harsh article written up in Seattle’s alternative news weekly, The Stranger. I captured my comments on my link blog.↩

Read Johnson’s message is very deliberate and very dangerous: here’s how to combat it§

This article says that the change in the government’s framing of [[coronavirus]] is moving the narrative to one of individual responsibility.

Previously the frame was that we were under threat from an enemy, and they knew best what to do to protect us. That didn’t work.

Jon suggests a framing around citizenship, the citizen narrative:

The right role for government in this story is to equip and enable us: to share as much information as possible and as much power as possible, so that we can work together where we live to find a new and sustainable normal.

Watched: {Building My Website - Part 2} 🌱 Digital Gardens§

Salman Ansari has a nice video here discussing a couple of things he’s been pondering about his [[digital garden]].

I like his use case of pulling his newsletter back in to his garden. I do the same with my microblog stream. I think it makes perfect sense to do this - gardens are where we cultivate our thoughts over time, but [[streams]] are a great (the best?) source for the seeds for the garden.

He also talks about pulling his notes back in to his main homepage. I’ve been thinking about this too. I have two separate sites at the moment, https://doubleloop.net and https://commonplace.doubleloop.net, that look kind of different and feel a bit disparate. It’s not that big of a deal. They are different rooms in my home on the web, so they don’t need to look identical - but it might make sense for people to find them both via the same front door and hallway…

Sounds like The Social Dilemma is weak§

Haven’t watched it yet, but have seen a couple of postings about [[The Social Dilemma]] suggesting that what I wondered might be the case - that it would be interesting but completely weak in implicating capitalism as a cause of any problems - is how it has turned out.

Buying from coops§

All the caveats about [[ethical consumerism]] aside, it feels good if you can buy from a [[coop]] - because you can pretty much guarantee that the money they make will go towards something else ‘good’, in a ripple effect.

Moving to GreenHost§

Happy to be in the process of moving my personal sites to a server at [[GreenHost]]. I used to be on cloudvault.me which was excellent but disappeared about 3 months ago… I chucked everything over to Digital Ocean to get it back up again. But keen to get off.

GreenHost has stellar environmental and ethical creds, and really not that far off the cost of a basic DO droplet.

[[tl;dr from Paris Marx on Canadian politics]]§

Okay, the tl;dr: The Liberals are the centrist party and considered the “natural governing party” because they spent so much of the 20th century in government. The typically dangle social programs and progressive reforms at the election and rarely follow through. The Conservatives are the right-wing party, they aren’t as right-wing as like the US Republicans, but still have social conservative and libertarian elements. The NDP used to be explicitly anti-capitalist decades ago, but are vaguely even social democratic now. They’re slightly to the left of the Liberals, but are willing to sacrifice Palestinian solidarity and a lot of other left causes to look “electable.” They’ve never been in government on the federal level, but have in a number of provinces. There’s also the Bloc Quebecois, a Quebec nationalist party, kind of centre-left but also Islamophobic (think French laïcité), and the Greens which are a neoliberal, not ecosocialist, party.

I started reading [[The Next Revolution]] again. The foreword (by [[Ursula K. Le Guin]]) and the introduction are great. It all sounds up my street. If I remember from last time, I found the essays by [[Bookchin]] himself less readable. But let’s see.

Not sure why but getting this error from org-publish on the Gitlab build pipeline. Doesn’t seem to like a link to a headline rather than just a file?

13:25 advice from various places and times

verner panton

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verner_Panton <button class="pull-url autopull" value="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verner_Panton">pull</button>

  • innovative with plastics and designs

  • cult following, but work faded in favor of philosophical, then consumerist minimalism, until present day - his curves and exotic shapes and colors didn't have a place until recent resurgeneces in 'maximalism' in design, or adding character

  • side note: I love how the state of the art in furniture and clothing design doesn't feel like it plateaus like it does with corporate UI/UX design. There is real room for innovation in actual consumer goods - unlike creative code and design where designs often live on as curiosities and go to die rather than filtering into mainstream practices and art as they do in clothing, furniture or similar places.

  • the sculpture sofas are incredible and worth poking around but they don't have much of a place today!

  • Damn, after refreshing my Firefox profile, I see that [[Omnibear]] no longer exists in the Firefox plugin repo and seems to be a bit abandoned. I think you can just download it and install locally. But if it’s abandoned, maybe time to look for something different.

  • I’ll just use my Emacs [[Micropub]] client for now for notes. For replies, likes, etc, either I install find something else, install Omnibear, or extend the Emacs Micropub client.

  • [[Beating the bounds]]:

the practice used by many English villages of walking the perimeter of their land to identify any fences or hedges that had encroached upon their shared wealth.

– [[Free, Fair and Alive]]

In our times, beating the bounds may initially involve direct action resistance and civil disobedience against enclosures, and attempts to "de-enclose" them.

– [[Free, Fair and Alive]]

  • Fixed up my Emacs micropub layer a bit - specifically the querying of available syndication targets.

  • Mastodon notifications UI says "Never miss a thing", not the attitude we should be going for, IMO

  • My web setup currently is kind of a personal data store.

    • I have my garden and a journal as plain text in git.
    • My stream is in WordPress.
    • I allow different apps access to this data.
      • My own personal renderings of my data, doubleloop.net and commonplace.doubleloop.net
      • Agora has access and renders my garden as part of a larger space.
      • The Fediverse also renders my stream (I push to it, but still)
    • This is a kind of homebrew web 3.0. think this is web 3.0 to me. A Rube Goldberg version, but still.
  • So currently my main issue is the stream being in WordPress. I don’t like this as a data store. I would like it in git with my other stuff, ideally. It is, some of it, in a sense. In my journal files. You could say I posse my journal to WordPress as another client. But I’m missing some key data. Metadata. Replies, responses, etc.

  • Can I PESOS maybe? From WP to git?

  • Or maybe I just use a non-WordPress frontend now. One that is git-backed. This would be the more fun approach (but much more work…)

    • Something like Barry’s transformative.
    • I could use org-publish or ox-hugo for the stream too. But how would that work with micropub and responses?

from daily respite

Yesterday I said that I have no idea how to overwinter [[amaryllis]] bulbs, but this is only partly true. I know what you’re supposed to do, I just don’t have a very good track record at it.
Back at the start of the pandemic, when everyone was hoarding yeast and stockpiling seeds, I decided to try again. I let the greens die back and put the pots in a dark corner of the basement.
Where they sat, forgotten, until more than a year later when my beloved came up from the basement holding three sad pots of crinkled empty nothingness.
“Can I please throw these outside?” she asked.
I surrendered to the inevitable, and out they went.
Fast-forward to summer. We were in the middle of a heatwave. I was standing at the kitchen window when I spotted something bright red sticking out of our brush pile in the woods. Was it a cardinal? No, it looked more like a flower. But I hadn’t planted anything over there. Unless…
Yes. Those dead bulbs had miraculously come back to life and were in full bloom. On the brush pile, in the woods.

In its less metaphorical sense, I have always preferred planting [[bulbs]] to seeds. We talk a lot metaphorically about the seeds of an idea. Are the long-running interests of one’s life bulbs?

a thing that I want to exist that I … probably won’t bother making myself:

a piece of software for people who are thinking about weaning themselves off of streaming (or who want to give artists extra support). you connect your [[last.fm]] account and your [[bandcamp]] account (potentially plus something else if people use something else to keep track of music they own). you configure a periodic spend (though it doesn’t automate buying anything). on a regular subscription-like cadence (possibly coinciding with bandcamp fridays), it emails you the top tracks / artists you’ve been listening to, shows you which are available on bandcamp, whether you already own what you’ve been listening to, and suggests what your configured spend should go to to reflect that. (maybe add on amazon mp3 downloads for things for which bandcamp isn’t available?)

I’ve had very low success in the past with those "here’s your [[spotify]] library on bandcamp!" tools because of all the things I like that are too corporate or too foreign. but if over a particular period I was listening to things that I really could be getting there, I’d like to be reminded of that.

I don’t know that I’ll ever want to go back to album-by-album or track-by-track ownership, but I wish that my fees were actually going to the artists I listen to.

I can [[wikilink]] or [[inline link]] or [[internal link]] (we discussed names for this with [[vera]] today) and I get autocompletion within a reasonable timeframe. Earlier autocomplete had gotten slow enough I couldn’t really link anymore.

This is a book for people who want to destroy Big Tech. It’s not a book for people who want to tame Big Tech. There’s no fixing Big Tech. It’s not a book for people who want to get rid of technology itself. Technology isn’t the problem. Stop thinking about what technology does and start thinking about who technology does it to and who it does it for. This is a book about the thing Big Tech fears the most: technology operated by and for the people who use it.

Hello there, editor Andrei speaking on the line. This should be technically published exactly in the Philippine Indepedence Day, but since I am currently between a mini sabatical and EOSY rest for the next school year, I apologize if it took longer than expected. So I decided to publish it now from the backburner and finalize it later.

Hello world, and welcome back to the monthly dump/status update! Pardon the radio silence over the few months, I am just busy at school during those period, but since I am in the end-of-school-year break, we’re actually back for at least two issues of this, alongside the daily journaling on [my personal wiki] Buckle up, since there will be mentions about Gildedguy Story #8 and you don’t want to [get snuck-up on][md-spoilers-ep7], right?

By the way for the Agora community, I’ll be pointing my notes here while keeping the old ones up as an archive via the new [[@ajhalili2006-archive]] once the patch for sources YAML file are merged upstream soon.

And since this is the weekend (as of 2024-06-01) to officially kickoff my mini-sabbatical between school year, this is the first edition of my monthly dump of the year, also known as monthly status updates if you keen checking the archives. So read on to know what I am cooking behind the scenes.

The [[Gildedguy Story 8]] Premiere Experience§

<iframe width=”1280” height=”720” src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/1156Dq6TaHg” frameborder=”0” allowfullscreen>

I literally woke up early on May 12 to catch up the Twitch premiere ([original VOD link], [archived in 1080p] via Storj DCS) just few minutes before it start. Based on the first watch, not only it was another banger1 by [Michael Moy][mikedmoy] and the production team based on what the community saying, but there are new lore have been dropped since [[Gildedguy Story 7]]. I’ll be not able to take note them all here in detail, but please take a watch for yourself.

It’s a blast after all, so [grab your "I Was There In Premiere" badge][luma] for free if you’re there (either via Twitch or YouTube). And expect a in-depth post on it and more on [my blog] later this month (or just before the next school year starts). If you need some Gildedguy Stories-themed mixtape on your library, [I made one since March] and currently open for song suggestions.

Chores on Personal Wiki§

Look at those grouped tabs

Since this Material for Mkdocs-powered site [started in last year][initial-commit], I am currently working to merge both the old digital garden and Jiroh’s Kooky Insane Stuff into here, alongside an upcoming one for Traumatized Autistics Department. Due to how the content migration is currently underway, you may see this non-dismissable banner on the top of every page similarly to this one below ([link to commit]):

      • Knowing up to 1000 would unlock getting a statistical feel of how quickly primes ‘thin out’.
      • Of course we can also count to 10: 4 primes below 10, so about two fifths.
      • I think they thin out logarithmically but I’m not sure which base, I could look it up but maybe I’ll think about it :)

Agora Development Plan: December 2025§

This document outlines the key goals and progress for the Agora project in December 2025.

1. The Signup Story: Self-Service Onboarding§

Goal: Allow users to join the Agora (add their digital garden) immediately via the web interface, removing the need for manual email processing.

Status (as of 2025-12-14)§

  • Bridge API (agora-bridge):
    • Updated POST /sources to trigger an immediate synchronous git clone.
    • This ensures the user’s content is available on disk immediately after signup.
  • Server UI (agora-server):
    • Added a "Join / Add Garden" form to the Settings Overlay (overlay.html).
    • Replaced the static "email us" instructions with an interactive form.
  • Client Logic:
    • Implemented form handling in settings.ts to submit data via fetch.
  • Server Proxy:
    • Created POST /api/join endpoint in agora.py to proxy requests to the Bridge API.

Next Steps / Refinements§

  • Asynchronous Processing: Move the git clone in Bridge to a background task (Celery/RQ) to prevent timeouts on large repos.
  • Persistent Sync: Ensure pull.py picks up the new source for future updates (currently requires Bridge restart).
  • Identity Verification: Implement a mechanism to verify ownership of the repo or identity (e.g., placing a file in the repo, or OAuth).
  • Feedback Loop: Show real-time progress of the clone operation in the UI.

2. Hosted Gardens & Forgejo Integration§

Goal: Provide a "Host me" option for users who don’t have a Git repository. We will provision a new garden for them on a federated Forgejo instance (git.anagora.org or similar).

Status (as of 2025-12-22)§

  • Infrastructure:
    • Deployed Forgejo using Coop Cloud (Abra).
    • Configured federation (ActivityPub/ForgeFed) for repositories.
    • Set up public visibility defaults.
  • Server UI (agora-server):
    • Updated Join overlay to include a "Host a garden for me" toggle.
    • Collects email/username for account provisioning.
  • Bridge Logic (agora-bridge):
    • Implemented ForgejoClient in api/forgejo.py.
    • Created /api/provision endpoint to create users/repos on Forgejo.
    • Returns the new clone URL to the server and auto-adds it to sources.yaml.

Next Steps§

  • Editing Experience: Improve the web-based editing flow. Currently users must use the basic Forgejo web editor or clone the repo locally. We should integrate a richer Markdown editor directly into the Agora or provide better guidance.

3. Fediverse Integration: An Active Commons§

Goal: Make anagora.org a full Fediverse participant. Users should be able to follow Agora users/nodes and receive updates when new content is published.

Current State§

  • agora-server/app/federation.py contains initial ActivityPub logic (WebFinger, Actor generation).
  • Basic Inbox and Outbox routes exist.

Planned Work§

  • Follower Management:
    • Implement Inbox handling for Follow activities. (Partially done in user_inbox)
    • Store followers in SQLite (followers table). (Done)
    • Implement Accept activity response. (Done in user_inbox via send_accept thread)
  • Content Broadcasting (Outbox):
    • Implemented federate_latest_loop background thread.
    • Polls git_utils.get_latest_changes_per_repo() every 5 minutes (10s in debug).
    • Broadcasts Create activities for new subnodes to followers.
    • Handles images gracefully (links instead of binary dumps).
    • Tracks federation state in federated_subnodes table.
  • Star Federation:
    • When a user stars a node in Agora, publish a Like activity.
    • Implemented federate_create to broadcast Like to @agora followers.

4. General Improvements§

  • Executable Subnodes:
    • Fixed subprocess timeouts to prevent server hangs (moved to Python native timeout + select for output limiting).
    • Implemented 256KB output limit to prevent OOM.
    • Refactored execution logic into util.py.
  • UI Polish:
    • Refined Subnode headers (pushed vs normal).
    • Cleaned up Footer layout (custard emoji placement, arrow prefixes).
    • Improved CSS for user links.
  • Configuration:
    • Updated API_BASE in DevelopmentConfig to use public URL, fixing browser security warnings.

5. UX & Accessibility§

  • Settings Revamp:
    • Reorganized Settings overlay into clear categories (Identity, Content, Display).
    • Improved layout for "Browse as" input.
    • Added "Apply & Reload" button.
  • Identity Flow:
    • Added "Browse as [user]" button to signup success message.
    • Added persistent "Browsing as [user]" toast on load to prevent confusion.
  • Editing Integration:
  • Layout Fixes:
    • Fixed sticky navbar (moved outside content wrapper).
    • Fixed scrollbar layout shift using scrollbar-gutter.
    • Smoothed toast entry animations.

Updating spacemacs 2024-03-12§

Various errors, culminating in a requirement of Emacs 28 from org-projectile.

I’m on Emacs 27.2.

Apparently last time I installed from source ([[Installing Emacs from source]]).

Maybe I’ll give that a quick go.

Alternatively I can get it from a Mint PPA.

But that might require me to upgrade to Mint 21 (currently on 20.3).

Ho hum. Things are just about working, so I’ll just leave it for now.

Update: following updating Emacs to 28 ([[Updating to Emacs 28 on Linux Mint]]), all seems to be working again.
