Via a link to Jared Pereira’s personal website tours posted on the IndieWeb chat, I stumbled on a bit of a goldmine of thoughts on the [[blog and wiki combo]] over at Tom Critchlow’s blog.

Lots of interesting new terms:

• [[blogchain]]: a string of short, ad-hoc posts in a blog that together build on a theme.
• [[digital campfires]]: somewhere in between the stream and the garden? A place for conversations.
• [[stock and flow]]: another metaphor for the wiki and the blog, the garden and the stream.
• [[collecting the dots]]: a nice phrase for the ideas in [[building a second brain]], [[zettelkasten]], etc.
• [[blogging without a publish button]]: seems like a way of building up articles over time, in draft, in public on the stream and the wiki.

these are generally notes on notes, i guess the paper it's from PLDI 2020 Static analysis of enterprise is hard due to dependency injection, inversion of control, and general obfuscation of bytecode; code generation techniques are also highly leveraged. The static analyzer for such applications should adopt:

Reading through the sites of longtimers of the web, like [[Ton]]‘s site, and more recently [[Phil Jones]]‘ and [[Bill Seitz]]‘ wikis, and what they link to, makes you realise that there’s such a ton of written history out there. It’s a real treasure trove. And that it’s important that it has been recorded out on the open web, not in some silo that might have vanished and the history lost.

Also makes me realise that much of what I’m thinking about has been thought about before! There’s some great resources out there. Phil calls it a [[renewal]] or a reboot. It’s good to have history to read through.

Usernames

Someone I had several courses with in high school recently joined instagram and continues to be recommended to me; their chosen username is https://www.instagram.com/akshaymusic101gmail.com6/.

I love it. The brazen declaration of 'music 101', the unashamed declaration of their email address - in the username no less! - and the addition of '6' to the end even though the username is available without the suffix are all fascinating to me.

This runs counter to all of the assumptions I had about what usernames should be - short, sweet, and poetic at best, informative if it makes sense - but this is none of those. It's long, brazen, littered with characters, and clearly advertises someone's character and their hobby. There's no question of how to contact them; their email is available!

The '6' is incredible, too; it's a complete subversion of the popular convention to postfix the username with numbers. Typically people will, upon trying their preferred username (usually some reiteration of their real name) will postfix it with a string of numbers that hold some meaning to them. Some add 99 or 1999 to suggest their birth year, while others choose numbers that are important to them such as their house number or a lucky number.

Still others picked up on this and began using these numbers without such a name conflict, picking up on the stylistic choice as a trend of some sort. This is one of those circumstances, but the name conflict truly doesn't exist - and the addition of the number breaks parity with the email-as-username scheme!

Google has this JSON-LD format for structured recipe data. As well as rich search results, it can be used by “assistants” to read out by voice.

A "Yes" we use to agree to move in some one way does not happen as much, but this is the best "Yes" to get to if you are trying to get shit done.   • Instead of asking "when’s a good time to talk" consider "is now a bad time to talk". Since everyone in our [[society]] coordinates on "No", it is faster and smoother to continue coordinating in terms of finding the "No".

This gives them a feeling of safety, first through control, then by the proof of control- by you asking them what path to take.       • After much debugging I finally realized the issue was not with systemd trying to start vnc while wayland was still not running, crashing too many times and then giving up (like I long thought it was), but rather that the vnc service was not depending on a target that was actually being triggered.
      • Trying to set up [[vnc]] so it starts only after wayland/a graphical session is running and it’s proving harder than expected for not the first time :)
      • I would expect to add a Requires or WantedBy in the systemd unit, but alas, it’s not as easy as that?
      • I use [[sway]] so maybe the right targets aren’t there by default though, as that’s supposed to be solved by a "[[desktop environment]]".
      • Somehow I ended up at https://github.com/jceb/dex which, beyonds its scope in a friendly way, tells me of how to configure a [[systemd autostart]] in a way that maybe could work. Plot twist: it didn’t.
      • https://github.com/maximbaz/dotfiles/issues/23 showed the way: the issue was that nothing was triggering graphical-session.target. I added a line to my sway config to do that as per the first comment in the issue (thank you [[maximbaz]] on github) and that was enough to fix my long standing woes. This feels like freedom :)
