layout: post title: "New phone: Nokia 6630" created: 1110000770 categories:
My "old" P800 gave up the ghost: the keypad stopped working. I got pretty frustrated with it in any case — the UI felt kludgy and the stylus wasn’t that great for working with it. The scroll wheel was nice, but not enough to make up for all the other deficiencies. I briefly used a temporary, do-nothing phone with no computer synchronization, no Bluetooth, nothin’. The experience was not pleasant, just lots of flipping open the laptop just to get someone’s number.
After seeing what Bryan Rieger is doing with Flash on phones, and the fact that only Nokia has licensed it so far, I decided to get a Nokia phone.
I got my new Nokia 6630 just yesterday, and am still figuring it out. This Loud Thinking blog post has lots of good info on why it’s the Best. Phone. Ever… as well as linking to a lot of useful applications.
I’m also going to link to this page of Fido GPRS settings, since I had to re-enter them.
(Yes, I do have to wait until Tiger before it will sync with my laptop, but it’s *really* easy to add contacts as people call)
Really great to read your thoughts on this, Ton! 15 years is a lot of experience. I also came across a post from Lilia Efimova related to the [[wiki/blog combo]] from a BlogWalk salon from 2004(!) - My dream wiki/weblog tool.
I feel both hemmed in by how my blog in its setup puts flow above stock, and how a wiki assumes stock more than flow.
I think you are right and that perhaps we are restricted by thinking about this in terms of wikis and blogs, because there is a lot of preconceptions associated with each of those. Perhaps thinking at the level of values/requirements, about something which can help us produce both stock and flow, can help us think about the process first, and then later comes the thinking about what tool or combo of tools can support us with that.
I often struggle with the assumed path of small elements to slightly more reworked content to articles.
I really like the ideas of patterns, constellations, Gestalts. Constellations is naturally quite close to the idea of [[connecting the dots]]! For my wikiblog to help me learn and grow my ideas, it definitely needs to help me see these constellations. I do sometimes wonder about the merits of making every concept as small as possible. Perhaps in the right context, yes, but I don’t feel that doing it dogmatically will always be helpful.
visualisations may point to novel constellations for me, emerging from the collection and jumble of stuff in the wiki. That I think is powerful.
I am hoping to explore a bit more how some of the mapping and bi-directional links in org-roam might help me with this.
Perhaps the ultimate requirement is for something that helps us see the constellations of our thoughts? I think for me this will be part stream (for sharing/receiving ideas from others), part note-taking tool, part garden, part visualisation.
Plus plenty of staring out of the window, away from tools!
Reading Hello World at the moment. Subtitled "being human in the age of algorithms".
It’s good so far. Clear and making its point well, drawing on plenty of examples of the problems with some present uses of decision-making [[algorithms]]. It’s being framed as ‘dilemmas’, so, the idea that there’s good as well as bad in what’s going on.
I wonder what the overall thesis will be though. Will there be some call to action as to what needs to be done? Or will it just be left that there is good and bad, and we need to be aware of that. Hoping for the former, something with some teeth.
Re: [[assemblage thinking]] and [[actor-network theory]]:
Both have a topological view of space, in which distance is a function of the intensity of a relation.
^ this makes me think of [[Ton]]‘s idea of [[social distance]].
I’ve been doing quite a lot of reading and not much writing the past week or so. I think that’s OK. It’s things I know I’m interested in, just don’t know that much about yet. I think the notes will coalesce into something eventually, with a bit of tending. The note-taking I’ve been doing is a bit too much copy-paste, not enough writing in my own words, so I could probably do with revisiting them a bit.
I’ve noticed some [[constellations]] of interest forming around [[agency]], [[self-determination]], [[networked agency]], [[assemblage thinking]], [[actor-network theory]], the [[actor model]]. Which tie into my past interests in [[agent-based systems]], and technological and political distributed systems.

Liking the report on the idea of a ‘[[British Digital Cooperative]]‘.
The BDC would be tasked with developing a surveillance-free platform architecture to enable citizens to interact with one another, provide support for publicly funded journalism, and develop resources for social and political communication.

i find my memories are most strongly associated with smells; when an idea occurs to me, it's due to a difference in environment, and is ither impacted by the smell of the room or introduces a smell of its own. the memory of these smells — just out of reach — seems to invade my consciousness when i'm thinking of childhood, of food or of friends.
consequently, i find myself detesting strong, artificial smells - perfume, cologne, the intrusive spray jutting out of teen clothing stores, the sickly sweet fanned barbecue and sugar from many american diners, and often even deoderant. the smells themselves don't necessarily bother me; it's the notion that they're constructed artificially, that they're misplacing key memories by drowning out more interesting voices with something that just does not belong in this context.
Enjoying the TV show at the moment, and feeling tempted to reread the [[His Dark Materials]] books again. I read it many years ago now, I guess when I was a teenager - I think there’s a lot of subtlety there (and less subtlety perhaps!) about religion and science.
Also I’ve had another recommendation for the Murderbot series (the first one being from Ton’s list), so I think I’ll read those at some point too.

Many are more familiar with the Chrome DevTools console than they are with a Unix command-line prompt. More familiar with WebSockets than BSD sockets, MDN than man pages. Bash and Zsh scripts calling into native code will never go away. But JavaScript and TypeScript scripts calling into WebAssembly code will be increasingly common. Many developers, we think, prefer web-first abstraction layers.

[[RSS-Bridge]] is not working out that well so far for bridging Facebook and Twitter to be honest. I keep getting the same old posts reappearing in my feed reader.
It’s been a nostalgic pleasure to have stumbled on old thoughts of mine from 15 years ago. Even though I was hosting it independently, the timelineliness of it all made me nonchalant - about my own thoughts! I got lucky that the Internet Archive has saved some of what I appear to have thought were ephemera to me at the time. With digital gardening I feel I’ll be more respectful of my notions going forwards.
[[Repair and jobs]]
To say nothing of the impact on jobs: landfilling a kiloton of ewaste creates <1 job; recycling that waste creates 15 jobs, while repairing it creates 200 good, local jobs that can’t be offshored (you don’t send a phone overseas for repair).

[[Mass surveillance]] in [[India]]
Under the laws, encryption – which keeps communications on the app private and inaccessible to outside parties – would have to be removed from [[WhatsApp]] in India and messages would have to be put into a “traceable” database. I am reminded by Wayback Machine that for a brief period in time my blog strapline was: "annulled by idle gusts of electronic massacre since 2006". Quite prescient, past me.
That being from a quote of [[Alexander Cockburn]]:
There is never finality in the display terminal’s screen, but an irresponsible whimsicality, as words, sentences, and paragraphs are negated at the touch of a key. The significance of the past, as expressed in the manuscript by a deleted word or an inserted correction, is annulled in idle gusts of electronic massacre

hey it’s me again~
i’ve decided i’m not going to treat this as a requirement, i’ll just write when i feel like it. after all i think it got boring just writing "i played games" after a while.
i got my first part of the covid vaccination, pfizer to be specific. it was definitely quicker than i expected. all that’s happened is my arm feels sore, so i’m happy with that. can’t wait for the second shot to knock me down :D /s
after that i got raising cane’s (chicken), enjoyable as always. went home and ate, then played minecraft with my friend for the rest of the day. it was a pretty decent day overall.
i am a little worried about my vaccination schedule though. unfortunately for me i signed up for an [[osu]] tournament a week or so ago and qualifiers are going to start very soon. so i don’t know if i’ll be able to make it through the tournament before my 2nd shot in 3 weeks or so.
anyways, that’s all for today.

My Nitter and Miniflux combo on YunoHost still going well for [[reading tweets without being on Twitter]]. I use it to keep up with what’s going on with organisations local to me, who are still on legacy social media platforms. Could still do with something that works well for RSSifying Facebook.
Been frequenting Mastodon more again recently what with the new wave of interesting people joining. Today and yesterday I thought also of writing, in general — how much I do it and how much I don’t, how many of my thoughts seep into the ether as weak electromagnetic radiation and are only occasionally recorded.
