It is widely believed that it is normal to become less physically active as you get older. But this is a pernicious myth about exercise.

Working out is beneficial when you're old. Well, I'm young, and I'm already crumbling. I should work out, I really should, but I don't like doing it…

13:15 lack of divorce

i wonder how much parental divorce would have changed me extremely privileged to realize that i have had a good upbringing without substantial trauma, but i wonder if a divorce and the subsequent process of navigating my relationship with my parents and others would have been beneficial for me in terms of personal and interpersonal development.

navigating coplex familial relationships feels like a headache, but it may have made me more sociable.

i suppose i am just looking for justification for my current state :: why am i not currently having an easy time reaching out to others? how do i begin to navigate a new environment?

maybe these things will come with time

13:35 tattoos

i used to be afraid of permanent modification now i welcome it :: it feels like i am recording myself at a moment in time to be ashamed of the past is to welcome the future it is good to acknowledge myself now && continue to move on!

22:00 awakening the prana and apana

https://freddieyam.com/gen2/p/the-day-my-kundalini-woke-up.html the kundalini is the way to enligntenment

focus your attention on the place you expect to find them

  • prana :: associated with defecation

  • apana :: associated with breathing

senstations in rectum and chest, respectively the sleeping Kundalini is said to coil around the coccyx, or vestigial tailbone

attempt to visualize light stretch physically to induce feeling of hollowness perceive energy moving downward throuhg lungs, contracting chest muscles abdomen: contract muscles to induce accumulating energy perceive feeling of lower spine moving towards the head anus downward moving energy due to apana two attentions: induction of particular percentpions and looking with imprecise expectations

provocations

  • sphincter muscles quivered light in head becomes increasingly bright and dense voltage building between head and anus kundalini explosion from deliberate isometric contractions of anus, buttocks, perineum and thighs shaking legs violently, sometimes pressing thighs together. tiring

link between sensations in head and anus cold sensation in abdomen below navel

result

after three days of meditation and several hours on the third day mind becomes quieter with head splitting between anus and head brilliant and deafening noise, work dark and huge jet of energy through the body completely filled head and body, originating at collar bone light and noise vanish instantly

outcome

clearly elevated spiritual state others seem divine, aware of essential goodness and infinite importance condition lasted three days; conviction that world is benevolent and good humored you become a saint and smile at everyone! you can permanently remain in state and stay a saint

absolutely happy and fearless : )

22:34 survival guide to phd

the namesake article can be found on andrej karpathy's blog

  • maximizing variance

  • extreme period of personal growth and self discovery

  • high density of exceptionally bright people who will become your best friends

  • expertise, only opportunity to become a recognized expert in the world at something !

there are lots of downsides! this is a very specific kind of experience that deserves a disclaimer. will end up working very hard and have to be OK with the suffering. need mental fortitude to handle the pressure, push through adn become successful

will have to put up with friends making actual money and living while you toil at PhD: (i'm actually totally okay with this, honestly.)

struggle that months of work are put into paper with a few citations while friends are working on exciting startups and pushing product will continue to question your life decisions must be certain that you can thrive in environment pursuing science. unsure: lean negative by default but mbe open to transformation phd has strong intrinsic value, not necc a means to an end !!!!!!!

picking the school

should be a top school top schools will attract other top people

have potential advisors — more than one! — that you would like to work with. student advisor relationship is incrediblt important. must prioritize each persons goal, understand advisors incentive structures and department projects you must help them gain more recognition through you! this is actually not just pro interaction

many axes to be aware of: fluffy vs professional, details of work vs hands off, some on specific models and others on specific tasks, some will meet you frequently and some wont, some answer emails right away and others never, some strongly support and others are cool with whatever

should first collect references; talking to students in casual environment etc want truthful answers to super specific questions must impress advisor and appeal to them for them to pick you! consider the entire lab

an exercise in the outer loop. fun adn frustrating experience, operating at a meta outer loop what problems are worth solving? what problems are ripe for solving?

we must develop a sense of 'taste' when it comes to problems; what problems are worth solving? what are worth thinking about? is it time to solve those problems yet? make sure you develop that taste as you come in the problems should be well conceived, tractable and relevant. make sure to start refining these.

make sure you know your advisors interests and strengths interests and strengths intimately

sublinear scaling of hardness

:: a 10x more impactful problem feels 10x harder, but this is a fallacy! it is often at most 2x - 3x more difficult to achieve, and can be easier but it forces you outside of the box, confronting the real limitations, thinking from first principles, changing strategy and innovating improve by 10% you are likely to, improve by 100% you will have to do things differently

be ambitious but with an attack

there are lots of important problems that do not make great 'projects' "If you do not work on an important problem, it's unlikely you'll every do important work. Great scientists have thought through, in a careful way, a number of important problems in their field, and they keep an eye on wondering how to attack them."

Ex. The three outstanding problems in physics were never worked at at Bell, but they are not actually important problems because there is no attack! The reasonable attack is the most important part of pursuing a problem.

be the man

be the person who did x. make a mark. you develop incredible skills !! according to Gladwell, a PhD makes you a bona fide expert imagine being an expert — will these tools advantage you or excite you? hell the fuck yeah

negatives

'incremental work' :: makes something more complex, gets better benchmark

  • not very productive, but will not be highly cited or used

ex. his thesis: took a long time to navigate the metaproblem and actually find the problem space and problem to be excited about working on.chat about interesting problems and see where interesting things are going. find something fertile, something promising, something with a lot of interesting possibilities find something practical at the moment - is it time for the technology? is it not there yet?

resistance

the advisor is not invallible

do not play game

a phd is more than just a sequence of papers you are a member of a community and your motivation is to further the interests of this community look beyond the academic game and think about what you can improve beyond all of these papers! e.g. blog improve academic search tools! improve teaching! improve the work.

writing papers

make sure to review lots of papers to learn have large exposure to lots of bad papers to learn what not to do — more important than just 'following a formula' to a good paper rely on the 'gestalt' of the papers; how does it look? how is the density? how is the framework? use the same language as others so that professors will pick them up and favorably judge identify the core contribution of the work and focus entirely on what forwards that develop a vocabulary to use. do this by writing frequently

attending conferences

go! go! go to the confreences! make sure to visit and it is so worth it to pay for them it is so important to become part of the community and share ideas, and many of the problems you are working on are so in line with the priorities of others in the field that you might as well play an active part in discussing methods, ideas etc

'there are three stages to a phd; in first, you haven't read most of the papers. in second, you recognize all of the papers. in third, you've had a beer with the first authors of all of the papers!'

there are no shortcuts or cheats. you can't game the system or put up false appearances ultimately you are trying to do good research and if you game any of the proxy metrics you won't be successful in the long run

  • I’ve set up [[syncthing]] on my [[YunoHost]] box. I already had it on my desktop and my mobile. The whole point of Syncthing is kind of that it’s [[P2P]], without a central server, but I thought this might be handy as an extra node for those two to sync between. I do occassionally get sync conflicts when I’ve edited stuff on both while they weren’t in communication with each other. It’s not a central server, just a more available node, I guess.

  • [[Syncthing]] or sync via [[NextCloud]]? I think I prefer via syncthing where it’s possible, because it’s P2P. You don’t rely on some central server to always be available. That said, it can be really handy sometimes. It made Calibre-web setup pretty easy for example, and photo syncing too.

  • I’ve set up a [[basic automatic photo sync from my phone to NextCloud]]. Chuffed to get that working. I struggled in the past with syncthing for that some reason I’ve forgotten now, and it made me have to stick with Google Photos.

11:56 some ideas from last night

website

where i list my opinions and rank my confidence in those opinions. maybe use the sorter ecosystem thing to rank how highly i believe in the opinions

studying

how other people use the internet is probably my favorite hobby. it's fascinating to me how others choose to navigate the same spaces in such different ways - eventually accumulating experience to some peak, dropping off the internet entirely, becoming inactive, or flatlining and posting consistently forever. some become more abstract - focusing more and more on art projects and metatheories of the internet rather than concrete ideas and discussions - while others become much more serious and real, playing internet drama nad political games to try to accumulate social clout. some people share as little of their life as possible while others are incredibly social and active, exposing every detail of their lives. this deserves more research - how does internet addiction craft and shape the people who choose to actively contribute to it? how does it transform the attitudes of those who don't use the internet frequently - as by virtue of existing now everyone plays a part? it's unclear

12:20 reaching out to others on the internet

is the most incredible thing. put lots of energy out there and you will recieve all of it in return because the people you are reaching out to are people, not public figures or intimidating prescences or brick walls of content - they are people, people who will respond to you, people who can reciprocate their admiration of your work, people who share your passions.

it's really hitting me that i need to finish some work i'm proud of - without it i will not be able to really impress others or gain respect from others, which will lead to me learning more, which will lead to me doing other very cool things.

    • A fun (art?) project that is building a network of solar-powered servers that work together to host a web site. Wherever currently has the most sun takes over the hosting.
    • Dunno how much of these things translate from art/fun to practical use, but good for raising questions and awareness about where we get our energy from.
    • Would be interesting to combine Solar Protocol with distributed content on something like [[Hyperdrive]] or [[IPFS]].
  • [[Data Garden]]

By storing data natureโ€™s way, in the DNA of plants, this work discusses the potential for truly green, carbon absorbing data storage, owned by the public rather than monopolistic corporations.

  • Another art project, not necessarily reality anytime soon, but I love this as an idea and a provocation.

Back-journaled from 2021-08-20 as we got back late to the hotel, took a walk after a relatively late dinner in our first night in Genoa.

Took the 10:33 train to Milan, it was a pleasant ride that we’ve done several times before — but of course not since the pandemic started.

It feels weird to be travelling again; we almost didn’t follow through with the travel plans. It seemed… just a bit weird to be back to travelling while so many people are still heavily affectd by both the virus an its consequences. We’re glad we did, though. It’s good to see the world beyond our bubble, if we can do it reasonably, and 1w essentially across the border seems reasonable to us right now.

Ocell was another reason we had objections to travelling, but she is being taking care of by our neighbours, who are very sweet and even sent pictures of her today. We are very lucky!

After only 1h in Milan we took a second train to Genoa, where we’ll spend a few days and tour the surroundings.

I need to do [[perf]] before next week, I think I’ll grab a few hours tomorrow night and try to get it out of the way.

  • Great [[Flancia Meet]] today. I was tired after little sleep so almost didn’t go, but really glad I did.
    • Some topics that arose:
      • Using text-based actions in the stoa as a simple metalayer of intergarden communication.
        • I like this, because thinking about counter-anti-disintermediation, Agora actions could be in theory anti-disintermediation, i.e. a locking together of individual digital gardens, if actions were part of the Agora platform in e.g. a DB. But if they are a protocol that you can add either in to the stoa or in to your own garden, then Agora remains an optional viewer. Lock-in does remain at a protocol level, but that seems less bad. [[Protocol cooperativism]]?
        • But you can also use the stoa if you don’t wish to put the actions in your own personal data store.
      • Ranking was mentioned as one of the actions.
      • Some really good discussion around moderation, trust, community, federation and defederation.

  • We had another play of [[Space Cats Fight Fascism]] today.

  • We spend a not insignificant chunk of our lives just on the upkeep of our household.

    • What are the stocks and flows? What are the processes? What system archetypes does it exhibit and what are the leverage points to make it function better?
    • I feel like ours has a few too many input flows of things and a blockage at the output which mean it gets easily cluttered.

General Election 2019ยง

This episode of Rev Left Radio sums up most of my views around the [[2019]] election pretty well: on Corbyn, the media, Brexit, limits of our electoral system, where to focus for these next five years.

https://revolutionaryleftradio.libsyn.com/uk-election

Anti-semitismยง

  • there have been problems with anti-semitism in the Labour party, but Corbyn himself is not anti-semitic
  • it was blown out of proportion by the media

Corbynยง

  • people on the doorstep personally didn’t like Corbyn, thanks to a huge smear campaign over the course of 4 years.

Brexitยง

  • Labour saying a second referendum would happen lost them a lot of votes

Where next?ยง

  • community focus

The alternative is to build a greater resilience among working-class people to the siren song of the billionaires. This can only be achieved by renewing the working-class infrastructure of the country. This means a trade union movement that can provide power at work and a Labour Party that can fight the daily battles to improve peopleโ€™s lives, but it also means cultural institutions that give people a sense of ownership over the places that they live and the ability to express class as something collective. It is only by overcoming the atomisation and alienation of our communities that we can prevent people being picked off by the right-wing press

Canvassing attempts to talk to everyone in an area and to know who they are, a quite different approach to standing in a busy spot and talking to whoever comes by. It is an example of structural rather than self-selecting organising, which Jane McAlevey argues has much more potential for building big majorities and real power โ€“ growing your army rather than just mobilising those who are already convinced.

Sometimes, it feels like my life hasnโ€™t changed much in years, but looking back over the previous decade through a lens of considering how Iโ€™ve changed really highlights the progress Iโ€™ve made. My changes in intellectual positions during this period have mostly been motivated by direct experience & changes in circumstance (which has made certain ideas more accessible to me while the flaws in others have become more obvious), rather than mere argumentation, but thatโ€™s mostly because this decade happened to be when I first engaged in most of the things that constitute โ€˜the harsh realities of adult lifeโ€™.

A brief timelineยง

In 2010, I had been in college already for three years (though, because I was still working through the ramifications of a magnificently flubbed first semester, I would remain in college for another four). I continued the kind of heavy book learning that one can do when one has no major responsibilities (reading thick books on unfamiliar subjects for the hell of it, and finishing them in a few days because thereโ€™s nothing better to do for hours at a time) for only another year, at which point I got my first job. In short order, I also got into my first serious adult relationship, lost my virginity, started disposing of all my new disposable income, and got the opportunity to work with one of my long-time idols. Then, in 2013, I lost my job & got it back six months later. In 2014, I rented a house with a friend & my girlfriend moved in, & later the mental state of my girlfriend deteriorated and I went deep into debt and deep into burn-out. I inherited a house, slowly dragged myself back out of debt, got another girlfriend in 2016 (for only six weeks), & a few years later got into debt again. In 2018 I self-published a book & in early 2019 I published a video game on Steam. Right now, my life seems to be evening off: my life hasnโ€™t really had any major new components since 2017, & things seem to be getting better for me in an incremental way (although they are, and always have been, a long way from ideal or even palatable).

Intellectual and personality transitionsยง

Working in my chosen industry disabused me of a lot of romantic notions about quality control that I had gotten from my education: actually-existing computer systems are, across the board, mostly piles of shit, and nobody is willing to budget much time to fixing them so long as they work well enough โ€” in other words, well enough to avoid foreseeable catastrophes, though no effort is really made to guard against unforeseeable ones or to look very hard for potential catastrophe material.

Over time, I also got disabused of some notions about capitalist efficiency: while clearly legible waste will be optimized away (though only when doing so serves some internal PR goal), the least bit of plausible deniability will allow enormous waste of resources to go completely unquestioned โ€” for years we spent more money licensing pieces of unreliable proprietary software to perform the equivalent of split-on-whitespace slowly than we did on the salaries of most employees, & for eight years of my employment I was never put on a project that wasnโ€™t canceled before its initial deployment (in other words, from the perspective of the companyโ€™s bottom line, they essentially paid me a salary for eight years to do nothing).

Photo by Ehud Neuhaus on Unsplash

Recognizing that capitalist efficiency was overblown in practice did not move me to the left as much as the direct experience of debt and indirect experience with the insurance, welfare, medical, and disability systems did. I was well aware that I was making multiple times what other people do, while working less hard than they were โ€” and even despite this, a little bit of sloppy accounting (a few too many takeout meals in a month, having to replace a phone or an appliance) can still put me into a level of debt thatโ€™s hard to escape from. Iโ€™ve responded to that by living hyper-frugally, but hyper- frugality only saves me from big, unforced errors โ€” it cannot save me from expenses like a broken car or a broken furnace or an ambulance ride to the emergency room. Meanwhile, Iโ€™ve seen systems intended to insulate vulnerable people from the harshness of the market repeatedly fail (paperwork errors causing disability payments to be a tiny fraction of minimum wage, for instance, or sudden medical insurance policy changes that hike up the price of necessary medication by a factor of 3), and Iโ€™ve had to try to take up the slack myself when these systems fail. I became unable to convince myself that all or most people who are impoverished have themselves to blame.

All these experiences made me very suspicious of neoliberal solutions. Markets have big, predictable biases. Government regulation & government incentive programs intended to manipulate those biases tend to create new biases that are on average no better for human beings than the previous version (though they are often not substantially worse โ€” they just redirect endless cash from one set of robber barons to a different set of robber barons).

Being thrust into interaction with (and dependence upon) markets will, for the unlucky and open-minded, produce a state of transcendent existential nihilism akin to the sublime: I am living in the belly of a beast that is vast beyond my full comprehension, who cares little what I do but whose body presents a set of problems I must navigate to survive; the skills that allow me moment- to-moment survival (and indeed, any skills at all) will not protect me from the beastโ€™s sudden mood swings or random whims, which will reliably maim me and which I have survived by luck alone.

This nihilism ended up being a good thing for me, psychologically.

When I could depend upon my parents for my continued survival, my biggest vulnerability was my ego. Throughout my childhood, and further into my adulthood than I would like to admit, I would boast, peacock, and belittle those around me whenever I felt unimportant. The reality of the economic pressures facing adults (and the need to carefully maintain the fragile emotional state of somebody on the verge of a much bigger & more violent breakdown than I would be capable of) made it crystal clear: nobody is important, and if I want to protect the things I care about, I will need to shamelessly prostrate myself sometimes to appease forces I find disgusting. For me, this realization is what characterizes โ€œmaturityโ€, and I have become less accepting of political projects centered around โ€˜tough loveโ€™ and more interested in projects aimed at making sure fewer people need to develop this traumatic form of โ€œmaturityโ€.

Working with my idol made me recognize in myself the dangers of parasocial relationships. Everybody you can see is struggling against the same forces you struggle against, making mistakes, full of blind spots in different places than yours. Visionaries in one area arenโ€™t saints. My experience was good, & it was only dispiriting because I recognized that my idol was human and a product of his environment. I tried to help him achieve his dream (which to a first approximation was also my dream), and failed because that dream couldnโ€™t pay my bills and the job that did wouldnโ€™t leave me with the energy to bring dreams to completion.

My bad relationship proved to me that itโ€™s better to be alone than to be in a bad relationship, and it demonstrated that being totally selfless is not sustainable in the presence of serious need. My good relationship showed me a less dramatic, more casual kind of easy love โ€” a love that you feel at home in, and that you fall into like a pillow-filled hammock โ€” and then showed me that even when a situation is good in the short term, itโ€™s sometimes reasonable to cut it off early when itโ€™s doomed to eventually fail. It took me a while to really understand and internalize that, as much as it hurt after six weeks of wonderful bonding, it was going to hurt a lot more after six months โ€” and since I was not prepared for the responsibilities Iโ€™d be taking on by taking the relationship to its next stage, staying together indefinitely was never really an option. Both reinforced a sort of anti-romantic mindset I began to develop this decade toward romantic relationships: that all relationships have a material basis that must be sustainable, and a healthy relationship is one that (while it occasionally requires maintenance) is largely self-sustaining โ€” a buffer from the part of the world that demands you always do more than yesterday for less return.

All of these experiences translated into an interest in politics and in group psychology. We live in a society that is profoundly dysfunctional. Building a less dysfunctional society is vital, if we want to see a world worth living in. Always having had an anti-authoritarian streak, Iโ€™ve identified as an anarchist for a long time, but it has been only during this decade that Iโ€™ve gotten serious about trying to understand what makes a social group healthy versus sick. Iโ€™ve spent a lot of time during the past five years trying to identify failure modes of society and write about them, just as Iโ€™ve spent a lot of time trying to identify the failure modes specific to those social assemblages built out of mixtures of computers and human beings. My attempts to synthesize this with an already-existing interest in magick have led to an interest specifically in myth and in the construction of new myths.

The Protocol 19 changes were designed to facilitate the creation of payment channels, which are Layer 2 protocols that support high-throughput use cases. Payment channels allow two parties who frequently transact with one another to move the bulk of their activity off chain, while still recording opening balances and final settlement on chain.

    • Title: Face Masks Against COVID-19: An Evidence Review
    • Meta:
    • Content
      • Abstract
        • The science around the use of masks by the general public to impede COVID-19 transmission is advancing rapidly. Policymakers need guidance on how masks should be used by the general population to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. In this narrative review, we develop an analytical framework to examine mask usage, considering and synthesizing the relevant literature to inform multiple areas: population impact; transmission characteristics; source control; PPE; sociological considerations; and implementation considerations. A primary route of transmission of COVID-19 is via respiratory droplets, and is known to be transmissible from presymptomatic and asymptomatic individuals. Reducing disease spread requires two things: first, limit contacts of infected individuals via physical distancing and other measures, and second, reduce the transmission probability per contact. The preponderance of evidence indicates that mask wearing reduces the transmissibility per contact by reducing transmission of infected droplets in both laboratory and clinical contexts. Public mask wearing is most effective at reducing spread of the virus when compliance is high. The decreased transmissibility could substantially reduce the death toll and economic impact while the cost of the intervention is low. Given the current shortages of medical masks we recommend the adoption of public cloth mask wearing, as an effective form of source control, in conjunction with existing hygiene, distancing, and contact tracing strategies. Because many respiratory droplets become smaller due to evaporation, we recommend increasing focus on a previously overlooked aspect of mask usage: mask-wearing by infectious people ("source control") with benefits at the population-level, rather than mask-wearing by susceptible people, such as health-care workers, with focus on individual outcomes. We recommend that public officials and governments strongly encourage the use of widespread face masks in public, including the use of appropriate regulation.
      • #quotes
        • The standard RCT paradigm is well-suited to medical interventions in which a treatment has a measurable effect at the individual level and furthermore, interventions and their outcomes are independent across persons comprising a target population.
        • By contrast, the effect of masks on a pandemic is a population-level outcome where individual-level interventions have an aggregate effect on their community as a system. Consider, for instance, the impact of source control โ€” its effect occurs to other individuals in the population, not the individual who implements the intervention by wearing a mask. This also underlies a common source of confusion โ€” most RCT studies in the field examine masks as personal protective equipment (PPE) because efficacy can be measured in individuals to whom treatment is applied, i.e. โ€œdid the mask protect the person who wore it?โ€ Even then, ethical issues prevent the availability of an unmasked control arm (27). The lack of direct causal identifiability requires a more integrative systems view of efficacy.
        • We need to consider first principles โ€” transmission properties of the disease, controlled biophysical characterizations alongside observational data, partially informative RCTs (primarily with respect to PPE), natural experiments (28), and policy implementation considerations โ€” a discursive synthesis of interdisciplinary lines of evidence which are disparate by necessity (9, 29). (p. 3)
