No, really, we want people talking. Northern Voice 2006 is pretty much right around the corner. The official deadline is <strike>tomorrow</strike>* next week, Wednesday, Nov. 16th. So apply as a speaker. Remember, this is a very "open tent", not necessarily über techie conference. Come and share stories with us in Vancouver. It’s going to be the same shareable size — about 250 people give or take, except that day 1 is Moose Camp — an open day for special interest groups or just old friends to take over the space. This is not a complete unconference — maybe you want to organize a mini conference of 10 or 20 people that are all interested in the same subject. Head over to the wiki and self organize (and let us know, and we’ll help make sure the word gets out).

I may actually extend this conference and try and gather people together for the week preceding Moose Camp/Northern Voice — a gathering of open source CMS/Blogging tools to talk about cross platform issues and working more closely together on standards and interoperability. Watch this space for more info (think Vancouver/Whistler in February: how could you NOT want to come?). At the very least, there will likely be a DrupalCon Vancouver 2006. Moose Camp will be the culmination of this event, hopefully as fun as the BarCamp Amsterdam event I attended at Mediamatic. What can I say, I might just be addicted to these things…

This is the official first post announcing planning of the Open Source CMS and Blogging Tools Summit. I’m taking the opportunity of the Northern Voice conference (and especially the spirit of Moose Camp) to try and put together a mini-conference of a variety of open source communities.

The great thing about open source is that we can all share and learn from each other. Our only goal is to make our own "product" better and — unlike proprietary systems — there is a large incentive to work together on shared areas of interest. This is made even easier when there are other areas of overlap, like the standard "stack" of technologies that support these tools, from the Linux operating system, the Apache web server, MySQL and PostgreSQL databases, and Python/Perl/PHP coding languages.

I met with Zak Greant on Friday, who is an evangelist working with ez Systems, makers of the ezPublish CMS. Roland is going to be contacting local representatives of the Plone community, like Enfold Systems. Of course, the Drupal community will be here, with Dries Buytaert and other developers convening in Vancouver for our North American meetup (thanks Chad and Angie for kickstarting discussions about that).

I know that Matt Mullenweg is going to be coming up for Northern Voice, so perhaps he can extend his trip and talk a little WordPress.

In part, many of the ideas for this summit came about from a presentation by the Joomla guys to the DrupalCon Amsterdam 2005 — we found we had a lot in common, and many areas of shared interest, from distributed user logins to templating engines. And of course, appearances by Rasmus Lehrndorf of PHP and David Axmark of MySQL just added to the notion that we are part of a larger ecosystem that should be working together more closely.

There are many other projects that I haven’t mentioned. Suffice it to say that if you’re an open source project and you’ve got an interest in putting content on the web, you’re welcome to self-organize a gathering of interested developers here in Vancouver, and to participate in the special interest groups.

So the purpose of this summit will in fact be twofold. On the one hand, it’s a chance for any interested projects to use this an umbrella event to have developer-centric meetings, planning and coding the future growth of their systems. On the other, it’s a chance to meet with like-minded people working on similar problems, and hopefully to collaborate on the solutions. The three day event will be a mix of project-centric meetings in the mornings, and special interest groups in the afternoon. We’re hoping to get at least three rooms, and space/time will be on a first come/first serve basis for any projects wanting to attend. Of course, there will be lots of power and wifi, so a good time for ad hoc developer collaboration in any case.

Some of the special interest groups might include:

• Identity and Authentication: from single sign on to distributed authentication, how can we make user interoperability seamless
• WYSIWYG: why are there so many rich text editors that are all mediocre at best? Is there a way to provide general rich text editing hooks, and then work on making a selection of robust, cross platform editors?
• Extending to the desktop: integration with protocols such as MetaWeblog API and the Atom Publishing Protocol
• Calendaring: it’s a big issue, dates and timezones are hard; making calendars work together across sites and to the desktop
• Templates and themes: making it really easy for designers to create standards compliant themes.
• Distributed development strategies: from CVS to newer distributed systems like darcs or bzr, share strategies on how your project works together, and what can be done to improve this
  
• Add your own special interest group: this is just a selection of themes…write a description and post to the wiki

To keep up to date or to help organize, please join the OSCMS Google group, or contact me. As well, Northern Voice’s Moose Camp is in some ways going to be the culmination of this event — I’ve added a page to the wiki that can be used to help organize your project and add your attendance details (you’ll need to register for Northern Voice if you plan to attend that as well).

Cost? Well, we’ll need to cover the costs for a venue if any. At most, we’ll have something like a minimal suggested donation…but we’re happy to have sponsors help out here.

FOSDEM 2006 is over. The picture at left was taken by Dries Buytaert, showcasing the fact that this was my first appearance at an event being associated with Jabber. I’d put "officially" somewhere in that last sentence, but I’m not a member of the Jabber Software Foundation (JSF)*, so it’s just my name on a presentation. I had a lot of fun co-presenting with Ralph for the second time — he knows all the technical nitty gritty, and I wave my hands and try and open people’s minds as to the current and future potential of XMPP.

Lots of people had heard about Jabber, and I think mine and Ralph’s intro presentation on the first day helped hilight the point that I have been trying to make for a while now: that it’s time for people to pick up the IETF-blessed XMPP standard and use it for real-time uses other than IM.

The picture at right is from my poking my head into the Jabber developer room on the second day — every seat was taken and it was standing room only. Ralph by all accounts kept the room quite full, being stuck doing all the presentations as other presenters hadn’t been able to make it. The Virtual Presence session (see the LLuna project for more info) became a step more virtual because the presenter wasn’t in the room, but that itself became a great example of uses of the technology.

Jabber booth was well-visited over the course of two days, but we were there mainly just answering questions as people came by — no stickers, posters, or demonstrations. I have to give major credit to Ralph, Edwin — they are the Jabber evangelists in Europe, and travel on their own dime attending such events (never mind getting Jabber into as many projects as they can in their day jobs). The whole mandate of the JSF, which is not to develop the server- or client-side sofware that people actually use, but rather to promote XMPP and preside over JEPs, is problematic when it comes to public events. There is only so much you can do in evangelizing a protocol without implementations.

So, for further events, the goal should be to use the Jabber presence as an umbrella group to include the open source projects that are building software on both the client and server side. There are a very wide range of projects, written in a number of different programming languages for a number of platforms. This very diversity should lead to some interesting discussions.

*On joining the JSF: right now, the JSF membership responsibilities states that "Prospective members are expected to have made significant contributions" and goes on to list mainly very technical contributions. Have to find out whether evangelism counts — I probably need to kick off a little more significant project at some point, like maybe lobbying OSU’s Open Source Lab to run a jabber server for every project that it hosts, including the all-important multi-user chat.

Next Jabber community event? (Doh! No "events" list on jabber.org — maybe convert Planet Jabber to Drupal so we can have events, too?) Well, I talked with Ralph about doing something around EuroOSCON in September (also maybe a camp). I don’t know if I will be attending OSCON in Portland this year…have to have a look and see if there is any Jabber activity happening there. Maybe I will go down to Penguin Day in Seattle and tell non-profits about Jabber.

As of yesterday evening, this site is now running Drupal 6 on a single Acquia codebase that also runs Seven Hills B&B (my parents’ bed and breakfast site — upgraded all the way from Drupal 4.6!) and Food Like That (my food / recipe site)

I continue to recommend Acquia for sites large and small. For smaller sites, if you’ve got some extra time around the holidays, the "Community" level of Acquia Network support is free until December 31st of this year. And once you sign up, you have that access for a full year. I have subscriptions for all the sites above that I’ve mentioned. You might have some non profit or smaller business sites that you help out with that would be a good fit.

For larger sites, you may be customizing too much to take advantage of Acquia. But, for startups just building out their Drupal implementation, having the consulting team and "backup support" of Acquia makes the Standard or Pro levels definitely worthwhile.

Anyway, end of the Acquia commercial :P I’m a fan of what those guys have done so far, but still would like to see a better install profile. This should directly lead to needing less of a Drupal developer to get somewhere fast. I used to joke about Cisco, which often gives out free / cheap hardware to non profits, that the equipment was worthless unless it had a Cisco Certified Engineer strapped to the top of it…

So, BMC is upgraded. A few highlights:

• forums are nuked — they hadn’t been used in ages and there was limited valuable content in there
• new theme — marinelli - the header has rotating photos that are some of my personal favourite images that I’ve taken over the years. Watch for giant bacon! I’d like to see this built into a theme with imagecache one of these days. It’s just manually selected and cropped images with a simple PHP rotator script.
• twitter integration — see my profile for the tweets from my personal account
• gravatar support — when you comment, you’ll have the picture associated with your email address displayed next to your comment
• comment notify — this is newly part of Acquia; simple email notification of follow ups on comments if you want to stay on top of something
• ratings — I don’t know what I’m going to do this yet. I turned on user rating of articles. The vast majority of my traffic is "anonymous" — searchers on Google ending up on this site. Maybe some of them will click a rating widget? We’ll see. If you leave a comment or manually visit the site (as opposed to visiting through RSS), please do "rate" any of the posts that you feel are good.

There is very likely stuff that’s not working here and there. There are lots of things I’d still like to work on, like actually customizing the theme to give it some of my own personality.

Big on my list is some sort of Google Reader integration, as my shared items is where I’m generating most of my daily content these days.

It’s hard to write — I’ve been meaning to write here for close to ten days but I never seem to get round to it. I travelled, I then had lots of work, I felt tired. Of course these are excuses to a point, but I hold no grudges against me I guess; it’s just kind of hard. Although I do find the time to brush my teeth and take showers, so perhaps I should find the time to write for just five minutes or so a day. It’s just trying harder.

Now I’ve had the idea of titling my posts after the date in which I write them, and keep an actual sort of diary here. I know, it’s not a new idea at all, that’s essentially what a blog is, but up to now I had thought about this blog as more of a collection of ideas and random occurrences than an actual diary in this structured sense.

Nice article from Mike Caulfield on blogs, wikis, and whether we could/should try to merge them into one thing.

Interestingly, Mike thinks they should be kept distinct. However, it does feel like his analysis of wikis is not thinking of them as personal wikis. Some of the values Mike mentions for wikis (like minimization of personal voice) maybe applied to the original wiki concept, but do not apply to personal wikis.

The Garden and the Stream Pop-up Session§

Yesterday I attended a very fun pop-up IndieWebCamp session on streams, blogs and wikis.

The Garden and the Stream

Around 25 people joined online over the course of the session.

It was a wide-ranging discussion on lots of wiki-adjacent topics. One of the things I really liked was the plurality of both the reasons for having a wiki, and of the tools people use to do it. Very IndieWeb.

Some parts of it that stuck in my brain:

• the link between the stream and the garden, and [[when you write in one or the other]]
• what actually are personal wikis? What do people use them for?
  • [[commonplace books]]
  • [[second brains]] / [[exobrains]]
• mind maps, [[memory palaces]]
  • historical examples of externalising memories, like walkabouts
• how do you structure your [[garden]] for yourself, and for others
  • is [[transclusion]] a good way to navigate ideas? Is the loss of narrative a problem?
• bidirectional links or backlinks
  • renewed interest in this (is this thanks to [[Roam]]?), but mostly focused on internal backlinks in your own wiki
  • can we use webmentions as a mechanism for bidirectional links across sites?

There was way more discussed than that. I think given the interest and the breadth of topics, it would be fun to get together semi-regularly.

Read: It’s Time to Tax Big Tech’s Data§

This article argues that the data that we create should be treated as a commons, and that we should tax the firms harvesting it. Especially at a time when the firms are making even bigger profits from it, and we are most likely going to endure more [[austerity]] measures as a result of the pandemic.

I agree with the redistribution of the wealth that big tech is hoovering up, but I’d say we should be working against the [[enclosure of the data commons]], not just letting it happen and then taxing it, no? Counter [[surveillance capitalism]] through [[open protocols]] and supporting the building of an [[open web]].

My fleeting notes I take with either [[org-capture]] or [[orgzly]], depending where I am. With my literature notes I write in [[org-mode]] and try to do the [[progressive summarisation]] approach. Permanent notes I use [[org-roam]].

I ended up in a little village called Middleton for the first time. You can get pretty close to the [[wind turbines]] there. On foot I think I could get even closer.

[[A web of wikis]]§

Stian Håklev posted an interesting question on the Digital Gardeners telegram group:

I’m curious how people feel about comments and interaction? And also interactivity between digital gardens in general (like paths connecting the parks of a city? :)).

[[Chris]] has talked enthusiastically about interlinking wikis before (e.g. during the [[Gardens and Streams IndieWeb session]]), so that’s a good indicator that there’s something to it. For me, perhaps because my wiki is still fairly new, or maybe because I already get the interactivity goodness on my [[stream]] and my articles, it’s something I haven’t generally been that interested in for my wiki notes thus far.

Stian has some use cases for which he would like the interactivity, and it feels like [[webmentions]] could go a long way to solving them:

I know comments have gotten a bad rep on the internet, attracting spam or trolls etc, but on the other hand I feel really frustrated when I can’t leave comments on Andy Matuschak’s notes…

I think Webmentions would work well here. You would write a comment as a post on your own site, and then this will notify Andy. He can choose to do whatever he wants with this comment (display the comment, display it as a backlink, ignore it completely, not display it at all, if he prefers). This way you can write a comment on whatever you want and the receiver chooses what to do with it.

Or another example - I just looked at Salman’s site about Deliberate rest (https://notes.salman.io/deliberate-rest), and thought that I just took some notes about attention restoration therapy from Deep Work - https://notes.reganmian.net/deep-work… Of course I could tell him here (I am :)) but that "doesn’t scale"…

Webmentions would work for this too - as just a simple ‘mention’, not necessarily a comment. Salman would be notified automatically that your note references his note. Salman could choose to display it as a backlink, if he liked.

The "doesn’t scale" comment is an interesting one, and puts me in mind of some of the discussion from [[Kicks]] around not forgetting the human work of keeping in touch with each other. It’s true that it doesn’t scale, but how much do we need it to?

Short-term, I am looking at adding at least page-level comments to my blog, using a Gatsby plugin and probably externally hosted comments.

Adding webmention support to receive comments could work here.

Also interested in experimenting with annotations, for example embedding Hypothes.is directly in the pages…

Kartik Prabhu has a nice article about receiving annotations on his posts via webmentions.

Long-term, I’m interesting in thinking about more structured ways of interlinking digital gardens - whether it looks more like interwiki links, blog backlinks, or something else, I’m not sure. I have some notes I’ll publish once I organize them a bit more.

I can definitely see the appeal of backlinks between wikis, but only in an abstract sense at the moment.

The utility is in how much it can facilitate [[networked thought]]. I guess for me it comes down to whether I see the utility in all of this connectivity on specifically my [[evergreen notes]], as opposed to my stream posts.

I am currently starting my journal. I'm hoping to make this a habit; catalogueing my thoughts at the end of every day. However, it's unclear whether I will have the self-discipline to keep this up. I'll try my best! I really enjoyed interacting with Brad — he reminded me precisely why I find technology so cool with his clear enthusiasm for everything in his office and the tools he uses to accomplish his tasks. 21:45 first day at work

arrived in stockholm yesterday. its a bit intimidating to go shopping and all but i love the city! its very personable and its like corona doesn't exist (aside from the social distancing signs). i do have a bit of a cough but i don't think that's due to any sort of important illness.

I spent a few hours yesterday walking around town trying to become better antiquated with the city. I really want to learn more about street photography while I'm here — this is the perfect opportunity to both navigate a city and hone my skills with my camera.

I also had some trouble buying groceries in the city. The machine failed on me twice and i'm not sure if it was my fault!

The [[spacemacs]] php layer bundles together lots of nice little features. I’m not sure which bits comes from where, but currently just the basic usage of SPC m g g to jump to definition is super handy already for spelunking around in vendor libraries.

PHPUnit command/package is not installed§

Was getting this error in [[Emacs]] when trying to run [[PHPUnit]] tests via phpunit.el. It’s possible to change the location of the phpunit executable via phpunit-set-dir-local-variable, but I wondered why it wasn’t working out of the box (when it was on another project). Turns out that a long time ago this particular project had the bin-dir setting in composer.json set to something else, rather than the standard vendor/bin (see https://getcomposer.org/doc/articles/vendor-binaries.md).

I just changed it back to the standard location, and phpunit worked fine again.

• More and more I would like to learn [[Racket]].

• I’m encountering increasingly frequent slowdowns and annoyances in [[Emacs]] of late. I think mostly when I’m working in [[org-roam]]. It seems pretty buggy - possibly just due to my config. But it doesn’t find files that I know exist, it slows down massively when processing the DB.

  • Ah - so not finding files might have been due to my use of a relative path in dir-locals.
  • I seem to have to keep on running org-roam-db-clear and org-roam-db-build-cache of late. Hope I’ve got it sorted now.
  • I am also getting big, annoying interruptions from this background process that runs to update the DB. org-roam-db-update-method is set to 'idle-timer, and org-roam-db-update-idle-seconds by default is set to 2. I think I’ll try changing the method first to 'immediate. If that is still no good, I’ll change back to idle timer but with a increased number of seconds.
  • immediate works a bit better for me, because I’m more likely to naturally pause after saving a file, so the brief processing time doesn’t bother me as much.
  • Still, would be good to see if the time for updating the DB could be reduced.

Then stay there and wait to be damaged out of the pickup animation by a guay or leever

    That’s GID, then you guay hover in that state up to the silver gaunts chest to turn it into fire arrows, then you hover out of bounds AGAIN to hit the water and complete the gim

    This is certainly boring and will take a lot of time

I think this is what I need for my free time: generative artwork. This isn't something to tout on an NFT website, nor is it some nergy bragging right - genuine experimentation with algorithmic art is incredibly important, and exploring it, I think, is vital to me and helpful for taking a break from the mundane. The algorithms hit different parts of the brain than type theory and formal reasoning can - these are incredibly important to practice, and equally important is exploring a space that has no tractable end goal. This generative rendering forces you to analyze in a way industry software and research never really could.

Having a dedicated space is probably the most important thing you can do for your art. Do it! Make this space and take the time to work on what you'd like. Bring the visualizations in your head to life - in one way or another. It's great that I've come back to this after so long, and I really look forward to generative art playing a larger part of my life and time going forward. It'll help me from burnout while keeping me "productive", both learning and exercising creativity.

I got a new 32gb ram module for my laptop. It turned out that I was shipped a 8gb model plus 8gb expansion instead of a 16gb (soldered mem) model, so now I have 40gb of ram. I’ll complain to the vendor as now I have 8gb of ram I have no use for, but I’m happy with the upgrade.

• I created a [[CTZN]] account, I am neil@ctzn.one. I like many things about [[Hypercore Protocol]] so interested to see how this works. I am guessing it has more of a P2P model, similar to the Beaker chat, with the servers acting as ‘pubs’. That said, the idea of another chat silo doesn’t fill me with joy, so I wonder where the data is stored. I still think the [[IndieWeb]] (or [[Solid]]) approach is the best philosophy (for me personally).

• Reading up a bit more on [[speculative outline]]s from [[Andy Matuschak]] - here. I like this idea that every time you write a new evergreen note, you add it to a speculative outline and let them grow organically. On that point, I prefer [[Ton]]‘s nomenclature - notes, [[notion]]s and [[emergent outline]]s.

• I currently make far more notes than notions. But this pipeline makes it clearer in my head about how notes become notions become outlines. So I feel now I can see why I want to make more concerted effort to make notions.

• A useful note for me from [[Andy Matuschak]] on this - How to process reading annotations into evergreen notes. I have plenty of reading annotations. It’s about processing them into notions. Let’s look at a recent one.

  • I think while I’m looking at a topic that is new to me, my notions might often be questions. This is fine:

The days I don’t write I feel a bit lost.

I’m finding it increasingly frustrating how I can’t use the agora at the day job; I run a copy of it for my own purposes, but I can’t use obsidian for corp note taking, so there’s some friction involved in switching back and forth. Still, it could be worse; but I tend to get hung up/distracted by lack of integration. If it were up to me I’d make all my work public and thus integrate all my writing in one agora.
